Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling..from glen to glen and down the mountain side...the summer's gone and all the leaves are falling...tis you,tis you must go and I must bide..yet come thee back when Summer's in the meadow, or when the valley's hushed, and white with snow...for I'll be here, in sunlight or in shadow..oh Danny boy,oh Danny boy, I love thee so................That should keep you amused until I can remember the second verse..God bless..

Ok, I had to look it up...great song..it always made me cry..."And if you come, when all the flowers are dying, and i am dead, as dead i well may be,you'll come and find the place where I am lying, and kneel and say an Ave there for me...and I shall hear, tho soft you tread above me...and all my dreams will warmer, sweeter be..if you'll not fail to tell me that you love me,I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me....

Thanks, Abigail. For stirring a cherished memory. My Grandfather had a wonderful voice, and would sing Dannyboy, Pennies from Heaven, Take me Home Again, Kathleen. Why do the Irish like sad songs?

A lot of libraries have the various song books published by Reader's Digest. There are themes to the various books, and I'm sure a song as well known as O Danny Boy would be in at least one of them. Might be something to look for for any of you musical types who want the music or lyrics to any of the "classical" old songs. Gerbil

I've sung this to my babies since they were born. I used to rock them to sleep with this.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen and down the mountain side The summer's gone and all the flowers are dying 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow Yes I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come when all the flowers are dying And I am dead as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I shall hear though soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me. I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Thank you very much everyone for your help. It is greatly appreciated!

Check out Irish and Scottish history, and you'll see that there's not a whole lot to be happy about, altho they do have some happy Celtic songs, and some can be a real stitch...real dry humor! I have several CDs os Celtic rigs and reels that will set your toes to tappin'. Makes housework go a bit faster!

Your local library should have it in cassette or cd in their media section . Also the local Kmart or Wal Mart will probally have some Irish / Celtic folk in their discount racks. My wife and son have purchased over 15 of these Irish folk tapes and CDs and never paid over four dollars.

Tracy,I've sang that song about all my life, in the shower, bath tub etc. What is the part, "and kneel and say an Ave there for me"? When I was "little", I had a brother killed in the Korean Conflict. I always thought they were saying "and kneel and say an Army Prayer" for me". Is Ave a prayer or something? Thanks. Eagle

-- eagle (eagle@alpha1.net), July 23, 2000.

An "AVE" means the Catholic prayer, "Hail Mary.".In Latin, the title is "Ave Maria", hence, "say an Ave for me", means pray a Hail Mary for the repose of my soul.....I knew that my 16 years of Catholic education would come in handy someday LOL..God bless.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen and down the mountain side The summer's gone and all the roses falling its you, its you must go and I must bide

but come ye back when summer s in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow it s I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so

But when ye come and all the flowers are dying if I am dead, as dead I well may be ye ll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an Ave there for me

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me

(Lyrics by Frederic E. Weatherly) Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen and down the mountain side The summer's gone and all the leaves are falling 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bye

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow And I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so

But if he come and all the roses dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be He'll come here and find the place I'm lying And kneel and say an Ave there for me

And I shall feel, oh soft you tread above me And then my grave will richer, sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me And I shall rest in peace until you come to me

SOA Lyrics "Danny Boy"

It is a well known fact that John McDermott sings the best "Danny Boy". You should have heard him do his solo on "The Irish Tenors" on CBC [Canada] recently. WOW! Also he was asked to be on CBC Radio last year to judge the best "Danny Boy' sung by a caller. It was great and all ages took part. Then He did the song........sniff! :)

-- mardi (mardigras@syd.eastlink.ca), June 06, 2001.

These are the lyrics as sung by an Irish troubador, by name of Tony Kelliher:

Oh, Danny Boy The pipes, the pipes are callin' From glen to glen and down the mountainside. The summer's gone and all the flowers are fallin' 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow. 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow. Oh, Danny Boy, Oh, Danny Boy I love you so.

If you should come and all the flowers are dying. You find me dead as dead I well may be. You'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear though soft you tread above me, And all my grave shall warm and sweeter be. And if you bend and tell me that you love me, Then I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

(are there any British subjects in the house?)

If I should live and you should die for Ireland, Let not your dying breath be all for me. But say a prayer that God should bless our sireland. I know He will and He shall set her free. And I shall take the pike that you have nearest, Ans strike a blow though weak my blow may be. But it will help the cause for which you died, my love, And I shall wait in prayer until God comes to me

I first started 2 like the song when i heard it on a film my brother was watching. "The memphis Belle". It is an aeroplane film, and my brother Tom loves that kind of thing. I wasnt interested but i watched it and found it was excellent. The words are: OH DANNY BOY, THE PIPES, THE PIPES ARE CALLING, FROM GLEN TO GLEN, AND DOWN THE MOUNTAIN SIDE, THE SUMMERS GONE AND ALL THE ROSES FALLING, ITS YOU, ITS YOU, MUST GO AND I MUST BIDE.

BUT COME YE BACK, WHEN SUMMERS IN THE MEADOW, OR WHEN THE VALLEYS HUSHED AND WHITE WITH SNOW, ITS I'LL BE HERE, IN SUNSHINE OR IN SHADOW, OH DANNY BOY, OH DANNY BOY, I LOVE YOU SO.

AND IF YOU COME WHEN ALL THE FLOWERS ARE DYING, AND I AM DEAD, AS DEAD I WELL MAY BE, YOU'LL COME AND FIND THE PLACE WHERE I AM LYING, AN KNEEL AND SAY AN "AVE" THERE FOR ME.

AND I SHALL HEAR, THO SOFT YOU TREAD ABOVE ME, AND ALL MY DREAMS WILL WARM AND SWEETER BE, IF YOU'LL NOT FAIL TO TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME, I'LL SIMPLY SLEEP IN PEACE TILL YOU COME HOME FOR ME,

I'LL SIMPLY SLEEP IN PEACE TILL YOU COME HOME FOR ME.

I'm constantly singing this song....i love it so much. Did you know that it is actually about a mothers love for her son??? These are not actually the proper words, but i cant find the original ones for you.......wait there!!!!!!

I have found the original lyrics they are: As a Beam O'er the Face of the Waters As a beam o'er the face of the waters may glow, While the tide runs in darkness and coldness below, So the cheek may be ting'd with a warm sunny smile Though the cold heart to ruin runs darkly the while.

One fatal Remembrance, one sorrow that throws Its bleak shade alike o'er our joys and our woes, To which life nothing darker or brighter can bring, For which Joy has no balm, and Affliction no sting:—

Oh! this thought in the midst of enjoyment will stay, Like a dead leafless branch in the summer's bright ray; The beams of the warm Sun play round it in vain— It may smile in his light, but it blooms not again!
