Quotably Quoted #55

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

When I first posted on this forum, well over a year ago, I predicted that there would be no significant impact to Y2K, and despite all of the hand wringing, that it would end with a whimper rather than a bang. Another of my predictions, that this board would simply wink out of existence, does not appear to have come true at least not yet. Instead we are left with a freeze frame to document one of the greatest public hysterias since Orson Wells convinced New England that Martian invaders were on a rampage.

Well Ed, I wont comment on any of your predictions, reality has said it all. As for your puzzlement, we clashed in an interested debate last March where I told you exactly WHY you would be wrong, but you refused to reexamine your assumptions. Luckily its never too late to question I Know what I Know.

I do have to hand it to you though from a marketing and communications point of view, what you did was raging success. This project will stand for a long time as a demonstration of both the power, and the dangers, of the Internet.

HEd Yourdom has always been, is, and will forever remain a pathetic memetic doomer, and a hopeless liar. He is a disgrace to the programming profession, MIT, and any and all who have, continue to, or will associate themselves with him.

Vindicated Regards,
Andy Ray

I must hand it to you, Andy Ray. It took real courage to quote someone who articulates your position so much better than you do. Computer Pro's writing next to yours reminds me of a boy and his dog.

OK, I'll play. What's the deal with "HEd"? I don't get it.

Hey Bud, hows the humidity today?

-- Ra (tion@l.1), July 15, 2000.

Hello Rational1,

The humidity is lower- thank goodness.

How are you?

Vindicated Regards,
Andy Ray

Doing well my friend. Leaving shortly for Dodger Stadium to see the Angels and Dodgers go at it again. Im a big fan of both teams so Ive got a 50/50 deal bustin down. Enjoy your stay and say hello to Monica for me.:) BTW, perhaps Ill run into you at the cyber cafi some evening.

Nemesis,

He's written that before, I think. He's probably just cut & pasting his by-line without bothering to reread it, and so the same errors keep getting perpetuated.

Now that you've noticed of course, he'll have to come up with *some* explanation. Just give him a day or two to think one up.

Frank

AR, some suggestions:

1. You have a profound respect for EY and want to refer to him as one would the Lord.

2. You were thinking of making some bad pun between "HEd" and "Head".

3. It was a typo (you'd have to admit that).

4. You were trying to make up a new degree title or honorific.

5. You were drunk as a monkey while posting and it seemed hilarious at the time.

6. You were drunk as a monkey while posting and discovered a hidden truth about EY that was wonderfully summarized by typing his name in that fashion, but it doesn't seem to make much sense while sober.

7. You were drunk as a monkey while posting and can't remember why you posted like that.

Hope it's helpful.

"someone",

Yeah, I've seen that before too. I have to blieve it's intentional. But the humour eludes me.

Ra,

You're actually friends with this dude? You have some credibility here, maybe you could explain his motivation to us, (without blowing his cover-I respect his cover). To me, he is a pain-in-the-arse nutcase.

Angels 6, Dodgers 2.excellent game.

Nemesis, I am curious just how active you were on the TB2000 forum last year, say from April through rollover? I was a very active Polly and took a ton of abuse, and gave some as well. As Ive stated before, after all those months of listening to the gross stupidity coming from the doomer camp I see no fault in reminding those folks just how delusional they were. It was fine to dish it out but hey, why are you guys always reminding us how foolish we were.

Much more so than myself, Andy Ray became a prime target of the forum Gestapo and the same folks that are bemoaning him now were the same fanatics that wanted him burned at the stake last year for daring to oppose their precious Armageddon.

I had the honor to work very closely with Andy Ray on a very important project, which I am proud to have played a part in. He has always carried himself with class and his ability to contain his temper is my envy. I find it somewhat comical to see the type of individuals that seem to love to scorn him. Losers berating one of lifes true winners. BTW, I appreciate the fact that you consider me to have some credibility on this forum. Im driven to be honest and have expressed my opinions be they popular or not.

Now sir, I ask again where were you last year?

-- Ra (tion@l.1), July 15, 2000.

"I see no fault in reminding those folks just how delusional they were."

Then do it on SLEZEBoard. Most of them moved on, but some of them are there. They're not here.

"the same folks that are bemoaning him now were the same fanatics that wanted him burned at the stake last year for daring to oppose their precious Armageddon."

You seem to be one of the very few who believe that. Do you have evidence...or do you just Know What You Know? LOL.

"Losers berating one of lifes true winners."

Proof? Or, should we just believe it because you say so? Are you sure you weren't a doomzie, Ra?

He only sees.

Ill be more than happy to respond when you find the inner strength to use your normal handle. Dont be fraid.

>> I see no fault in reminding those folks just how delusional they were. <<

OK. Let's get going! So... [rim shot] ...just how delusional was I? [audience guffaws in delighted anticipation]...

[...waiting for punchline...]

Ra, each of us was delusional to a different degree. Andy Ray may be able to dredge up 55 (and counting) quotes from mostly anonymous sources whose handles have long since disappeared into the mists.

Exactly how does AR quoting some anonymous "X" remind any one of us how delusional we were? He is using a pea shooter and thinking it is a shotgun set for a wide spread. If we doomers had actually been a regimented cult with a dogma we all believed, then quoting one would be equivalent to quoting all. But we weren't and it isn't.

The whole model breaks down. All AR is really doing is randomly quoting things said by someone on some date. We don't often know who. And there is no reason to thing it has any effect on anyone here.

But, it is OK with me if you imagine it has some meaning andif AR continues to do it. You are simply indulging your own illusion in that case.

-- Brian McLaughlin (brianm@ims.com), July 15, 2000.

Brian, you are one of the few that post under your real name. For that you have my admiration, if not my condolence. So that pretty much leaves everyone else that doesnt in the anonymous "X" category. Who knows who was who last year and who is who this year? More importantly, who gives a damn?

Andys reminders are but a small part of the information flow on this forum. They provide an important history lesson for some and a brutal reminder of follys past for others. When it comes to Andy Ray's character I do KNOW what I KNOW. If you find these trips down memory lane too painful, why not just cruise on by them? I think Al-d is a mental case but I still read his drivel. Go figure.

I like my illusions; they have served me well in this convoluted existence we seem to live in. Like you, I am ready to spend more time on a wider variety of subjects, provided they elicit the same level of passion that Y2K has. Now I will leave you with some words from my old friend Willie:

Me thinks thou doth protest too much
