Anyone know a good (read: cheap) source of large quantities of DE (diatomaceous earth...sp?) Sue

I had bought an 8 oz. shaker can at the nursery, and looked up the company on the web. I haven't checked other brands 'cause this is also the brand my feed store uses. The Carl Pool company sells Diatomaceous Earth in various sizes. They only sell the food grade. In nurseries and feed stores here, it's sold under the name of 'Earth-Safe Organics.' It comes in an 8 oz. shaker can, and bags of 1= pounds and 8 pounds. These sizes can also be ordered from Carl Pool over the internet, altho I never have. http://www.vitalearth.com/ Click 'Earth-Safe' on the left side. Scroll down to the DE.

My feed store carries the smaller sizes, but orders the 50 pound bags for me. I pay $29.95/bag.

The name on the 50 pound bag is 'Celite.' I called Carl Pool to question this, and they said it's theirs.

Sue: For any quantity of Food Grade (the good stuff) D.E. you can contact Bill Worrell at Showpoultry@naxs.net. or phone him at Briar Patch Farm (540)728-9902. From him you can get any amount from one pound to as many tons as you want. Food grade D.E. is the only grade you can feed to animals and birds. Randy Henry (JaRaCo)

I buy mine in 50 lb bags from a local feed store. It's produced by Gardenville here in Tx and is $18.95 for the 50lb bag.

The DE I purchase is also from Texas. But my feed store is charging $10 more than yours for a 50 pound bag.

DE that is intended for swimming pool filters is processed differently than insecticide DE and won't kill insects as it doesn't have the nice sharp edges on the particles. Don't be fooled by the cheaper prices on pool grade DE--it won't work against insects.

Not only is the filter grade DE larger pieces and won't kill the insects, it'll kill your critters. I sprinkle the food grade DE on the ground of the chicken pens; it kills the flies and deworms the chooks. It's not killing with poison; it slits the outer skin and dehydrates the insects. With problem insects in the house, you don't have to worry when you sprinkle it on the floor or wherever....unless you have a dog like mine who licks it up and doesn't leave it where I place it!
