Mae-West Outage Fixed

By Max Smetannikov, Inter@ctive Week July 13, 2000 4:02 PM ET

Internet service providers trying to peer at the Metropolitan Area Ethernet network access point in the Silicon Valley, dubbed MAE-West, have been out of luck for almost two days because of a problem with a router on the old FIDI network inside the exchange. MAE-West is managed by WorldCom

Customers began to experience slowdowns in the service on July 10, and reportedly stopped most of the peering by July 11 on the 1993 Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) network, which still supports one-third of 100 customers peering at the exchange.

"Last night we performed maintenance on the FDDI platform, between midnight and 4 a.m. our technical team replaced some of the cards in some of the gigaswitches, and brought all the traffic back up around 4-5 a.m.," an MCI WorldCom spokeswoman said.
