For those out there still searching for the alternative zoom lens to the more expensive Nikon and Canon brands in the 28-70mm focal length, here's an interesting thread on the newly released Tokina 28-80/2.8 zoom:

To summarize, those who have tested the lens found it to be better than the 28-70/2.6-2.8 ATX-Pro II, but it had some minor glitches in its close-focusing firmware on the long end of the zoom.
