Scanning Errors Settled Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm says she has reached a settlement with JC Penney over scanning errors. In December 1999, Granholm found that more than 33-percent of the items purchased at four Michigan JC Penney stores rang up incorrectly at the register. As part of the settlement, the retailer will designate an on-site pricing associate to monitor and correct pricing errors. JC Penney must also pay a $100,000 civil penalty, half of which will be waived if the retailer maintains a 96-percent scanner accuracy rate.
