OAKLAND -- Thousands of Oakland customers lost power to their homes and businesses early Friday morning.

The 2:38 a.m. power outage affected 7,482 customers, but within an hour electricity was restored to all but 1,100, said Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesperson Staci Homrig.

"A wire was down so we had to restring it," Homrig said. "The wire may have burned midspan."

Homrig said the outage originated along the 1400 block of Wellington Street, and was caused by equipment failure.

"There may have been a problem with one of the conductors," Homrig said.

The outage areas stretching from Grosvenor Place and 35th Avenue to State Highway 13, as well as Wellington Street and Lincoln Avenue to Interstate 580 North.

Power was fully restored by 9:30 a.m
