Boks may be monitored by a spider?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

Within the last month I posted an e-mail address in the chat room for someone to contact me. I have been moitoring my e-mails since and have seen a marked increase in spams-specifically for loan scams.

I thought Boks was obscure enough, and I do not think any regulars there gave my address to anyone. These leads me to the conclusion of a robot, or someone actually monitoring. I knew this happened in other chat rooms; I just did not think this would be one of them. Robots? Hey-It could be just me.

BUT, I am suspicious. To those who do not care about spam-this is not for you. To me it is an invasion of privacy and a theft of bandwidth.

Answers

FYI- This has not been my experience. I think a spider in this space is unlikely.

The issue of SPAM is one I don't understand, really. I have given my e-mail addy out in fora & chats for two years and do not (knock wood) receive SPAM. Maybe one piece each month at most. This is not difficult to deal with. Perhaps this is why I am so rabid about posters offering real addys. I don't have problems, so therefore people are being paranoid. I will attempt to reconfigure my thinking on this.

Underground, have you been able to rule out the possibility that a different site triggered the spam. Just a thought.

Further Underground,

I do not think that Bok's chat room has any type of robot lurking. I am with (who was it David?) someone that suggests that maybe it came from another site you visited.

I know that I once checked out CPR's new forum, just to see who was posting there. Withing 3 days, I had received some spam in my mail box. Not saying that CPR is responsible, but that is when it came. Maybe it is from the website that hosts his forum.

Anyway, I sent a little "nice" note telling them to drop me from their spam, or that I would contact the postmaster for the site. At the moment, the spam has stopped. Might want to give that a try.

Sheeple:

CPR has a new forum? I didn't even know he had an OLD one. Do you have a link?

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), July 03, 2000.

Further,

I have listed my real email address a couple of times at Bok's and never had any problem with SPAM.

-- Flash (flash@flash.hq), July 03, 2000.

Anita,

Sorry, but I don't have a link to CPR's forum. I just went there to see who was posting, and I thought I saw your name there. Oh well... It had nothing to do with Y2K.

Anita,

I saw your name there as well,no doubt about it.

Underground,

I have not had this experience at least not with Bok's.

Anita,

Allow moi to correct himself,I was thinking of Stephen Pooles site,my bad.Way too early, excuse me.

-- capnfun (capnfun1@excite.com), July 03, 2000.

No problem,Capn.

I enjoy Stephen's new site. There's NO talk of Y2k; well, there are a few comparisons now and then, but nothing untowardly.

Sheeple: AFAIK, Charlie has not yet created an internet forum. I find it amusing that you confuse Stephen and Charlie. Stephen is the one who's tired of Y2k.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), July 03, 2000.

Hey-I did say it could just be me. I do not want to smear a good meeting place. The timing seemed coincidental. I had not opted in or put my address on any new site within the last month.

Thanks for your responses. I will still gather there.

Anita,

Then it was Poole's new place. Oh well, my goof.

What a joke. WHO has more names/addresses of MORONS than Gary North, LosersWire, Hyatt and the rest of the doomers. Maybe you forget all those lists and forums you posted to in the past and your name is in the SUCKER BIN ..............as a TOTALLY QUALIFIED SUCKER who would buy into anything.

I have NO CONNECTION WITH Y2k sites other than as a contributer. I don't like anything to Amazon or Fat Brain (Yourdon) or as many vendors as possible (Hyatt).

The forum is Andy Ray's not mine. There is another that Poole has revived that has little to do with Y2k.

I don't have a web site much less a "new one". I have an old site I use that has old Y2k pages on it.

A tech I know sent me a note that PORNO SITEs have Java Scripts that "reap" e-mail addresses and re-sell them. He was specific about 'one of the biggest buyers' are finance and mortgage companies.

Given the Y2k doomzies love of "fantasies" whether gloom or sex, the origin of your SPAM should be obvious.

-- cpr (buytexas@swbell.net), July 03, 2000.

BTW...........SUCKERS.........returning "spam" and requesting OFF is the easiest way to get yourself on Dozens of other lists.

WHY? YOU..SUCKER.........just qualified your email mail address as a valid and active one.

ENJOY YOUR OWN STUPIDITY.

There's more to it than that, Charlie. I once used my ISP's E-mail address to post to fora and stopped. I've never ONCE responded to a spam to say "delete". I was already forewarned about that. I STILL receive more spam on my ISP's account than I do from the hotmail account I use in fora, although I HAVE seen spam coming now at the hotmail account as well.

It looks TO ME like some folks obtained a directory list of my ISP. In THOSE cases, I send a spam complaint to the ISP of the offending party's ISP [if it's even obvious.] I'm obviously not being targeted because of my gender or inclinations, as I received spam this morning that indicated that an 18-year old girl was willing to give me a blow- job.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), July 03, 2000.

Uh, excuse me, mr. cpr? As I'm looking to move up in the world, make a few more shekels as it were, I was wondering...Who empties your spit buckets? You know the one that hangs down from around your neck? The one attached to the rather moist keyboard? Who squeegees your poly carpet protector (no pun intended)? Windshield wiper for the monitor need replacing? Walls could probably use another coat of anti- bacterial paint - anybody in line for this sweetheart job?

For crying out loud man, get yourself outdoors for a bit. Breath in...Breath out...That's better.

DISGUSTING!!! ANOTHER SCAM I'LL HAVE TO INVESTIGATE!! Could you send me the URL so I can start my investigation?

Bingo1,

I almost spit water out of my mouth when I read your response. Give me a little warning next time, so as I know not to be drinking anytime that I read a response like that. ROTFLMAO! (but so true)

Anita,

When I responded, it had my full signature file attached. The e-mail didn't bounce back, and I have not gotten another e-mail. Postmasters love to get letters from admins like me complaining about users of their systems. NOT!

-- (Sheeple@Greener.Pastures), July 03, 2000.

Crp,

For a second there I thought CPR had a sense of humor. A bad one maybe, but still a sense of humor.

Oh well,

Frank

I made the mistake of signing into iwon.com and some stock picking sites. I get several get-rich-quick spams a day. I just delete them.

cpr, you have been so civilized the past few days. Are you starting to froth again? I hope not.

If it weren't for Spam, I'd be soooo lonely.
