A number of firms including supermarket
chain Safeway Inc. (SWY.N) are set to
post financial results later in the week,
which could give a preview of the earnings
picture when the reporting season kicks
into gear the following week.

An unusually high number of companies have
already put Wall Street on notice that they
may fall short of profit estimates.

According to earnings tracking service
First Call/Thomson Financial, 175 firms
have said they will miss profit estimates
for the current quarter, out of a total
of 309 that have made preannouncements so
far.
