Merklinger book and Toyo field

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread

After reading Merklinger's book 'Focusing the View Camera' I feel delighted that how simple his method is get everything in focus. All you need is to estimate a tilt angle for the front lens board, and go from there. But in pratice, I found it's extremely hard to measure the tilt angle on my Toyo field AX, due to it's base tilt design and lack of scale.

Anyone on the forum has the same experience or suggestions? Is there any other method I can use when focusing?

Merklinger's book and web site provide a brilliant (although wordy) exposition, but in practice the method is not that useful. I describe a detailed procedure about focusing without scales. It's on the main page at http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~qtluong/photography/lf/how-to-focus.html.
