buying bulk pectin and canning lids

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Do any of you guys have a source to buy bulk pectin? I love making jams and jellies this time of year (8 jars of plum jam yesterday) but we don't currently have a good source of crab apples for pectin. Buying the little boxes gets expensive so I'm looking for alternatives. I'm also interested in buying bulk canning jar lids. Many thanks - Kim

Kim, there's a place-Pat's Bulk Foods- not too far from me that sells pectin a whole lot cheaper. I don't have a brand name for it(she bags it and puts simple label on it), but I'll try to find out more about it Wed. She's not open on Mon. A friend andI tried getting canning lids cheaper through Kerr/Ball Corporation, a couple of yars ago. It wasn't worth the effort. I doubt that they've changed their policy. One person told us if you bought 1,000 boxes, you could get them for $.65 or so a box. And someone else told us we couldn't even do that. Maybe someone else can help out, I would love to save some money. $.82 a box for reg. at Wally World and $1.39 for Wide mouth. More everywhere else around here.

My cure for the expensive lid thing is to get them at $.50 a box on clearance at the end of the season. Sure beats .82 for them!!! I'd love to have the info on Pat's bulk pectin stuff too if you get a min to send it to me! Thanks

Dutch gel-not a brand name, only sold to bulk food stores. Sells for $3.98 #, she sells enough for 3 batches in a bag for $1.55. She ships for $4.00 handling plus shipping. I'll post address and phone no. later.

What did folks do before Sure-jel and can-jel ....etc.??? It seems there should to be a better way.I bought sure-jel last night at 1.95 cents per box. That and the price of sugar makes it hard to make the good stuff. I realize you can freeze the juice and sometimes the fruit and you can get the sugar on sale and stock up. I guess everything is high now. Oh and while I am here... what was said about the watermelon jam a while back. The recipe said to keep in the frige after you put it in jars. Can you make watermelon jelly and keep it like other jellies?

I make a lot of jelly and at the end of the season Wal-mart sells there leftover boxes of Sure-jell for $.25 a box. and the lids for $.50 . It's worth asking someone in that dept. when that usually is. Good Luck and may all your lids ping

Bonnie,

They added fruits that are high in pectin, such as apples (slightly green work best). Look at your library or used book store or local Granny's house for a World War II era cookbook - mine has instructions for all types of jams and jellies with no pectin other than that found in other fruits.

Wow! Canning lids on sale? Never seen such a beast. Lids here are well over a buck a box. Anyway, the July/August Organic Gardening has a couple of suppliers running ads in the classified section. Have never dealt with them. There doesn't seem to be a Countryside near the surface, but there are probably some suppliers in there too. Gerbil

Kim, I bought lids directly from the source (seems to me that it wasn't Ball, although Ball is the manufacturer...some other company bought them plus Kerr, I think???) Anyway, I bought several cases ( to equal) 864 wide mouth and 720 regular lids. I broke even on the regular size (even though I saved some, the postage made it equal to store prices) but I think I saved something like 11 cents a box on the wide mouths. This was against "on sale" store prices. I could find mailorder information for you if you need it...must be on an old invoice filed away somewhere. Now I have plenty on hand and won't have to think about lids for a while!

Hi, I just went to Dollar General Store, and they have the pectin for $1.00 a box. Rings and reg. lids together for $1.50, and their jars are $6.00 for quarts, $5.00 for pints. You might want to check this out. Beth (NC)

Have any of you folks heard that adding pectin to your diet can reduce cholesterol?

My doctor wants me to go on an expensive prescription medicine but I want to give pectin a try.

Did the adress of the person that sells it bulk ever get posted?

Happy Holidays and thanks.

We have a half acre garden, it seems nuts to use expensive pectin and tons of sugar to make jam. I cook the fruit, cool it, then drain as much juice as I can from the pulp. I then simmer the juice in a shallow pan until it starts to thicken. I combine the pulp, juice and sugar to taste. This usually results in a thinner consistency but that's fine with me. It may not keep as long opened but it never goes bad at my house. With much less sugar I just heap it on and don't feel guilty about so much sugar. This process works real fine for fruit like peaches and apricots but may be a bit too powerful for fruits like berries, I think I'll experiment diluting berries with apples.

Dear friends,

Saw your postings below. Need your help to find pectin distributors. We are a USA and China based trading company and are asked by a China pectin producer to represent them in international market (outside of China).

I'm looking for any companies who may purchase pectin from China in bulk quantities. We do not want to carry inventories and sell retail but rather sell in bulk to pectin distributors worldwide. Hope those distributors can pass the saving to the end users.

Please drop me an email if you can provide any info. Thanks
