Question about new baby keets?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

This is Sonda in Ks. I picked up those 7 baby keets yesterday. Put them in a wadeing pool with a light bulb, dry mesh & water. This morning one that is smaller than the rest is not moveing around like the rest. I wrapped it up in a cloth & put it in the corner of the tail of my tee-shirt, while I hard boiled some eggs. I put in a bigger watt bulb over them, mixed some dry food with water & put in a pan. Going to smash up a hard boiled egg for them---I put the sick one back in the pool with the others--they aren't picking on him! I think he is a latier hatch, smaller, & stressed from all the moves until we even got it. What else do I need to do? Do I remember Dad putting small amount of organic vinegar in their water???? It has been toooo many years since we had babies--help--I can't remember anymore! What else should I do? Thanks so much for you help in advance! Sonda in Ks.

It is has been a couple of years since the subject of vinegar in poultry water came up. The consensus then was just something about adding a bit of it to poultry water would greatly assists them. As I recall, thinking at the time was it provided a bit of acidity which helped them digest feed better.

Sorry about the keet....

Don't forget they can get pasted vents like chicks do. Also, Turkey Starter is the best for keets. I gave my starter moist for the first week. Make sure that they are not too hot. After 10 days or so, you will need something with higher walls than the plastic kiddie pool, if that's what you are using.

Good Luck!

Thanks Doreen, I already have stock racks on the wadeing pool as those little suckers can already jump! The food I'm feeding is poultry mash & I put some in water as I remembered we use to do that. Next time I buy food I'll remember turkey! These 6 are doing fine right now. I think the one we lost was the runt of the litter. ha Thanks for your help! Sonda in Ks.

Hi,I put 3 tablespoons of sugar in the gallon water jugs of all my baby birds until they are 6 weeks old.the difference is amazing. Daryll

Usually the vinegar used is REAL apple cider vinegar (which you can find where anymore...). It does seem to help them tremendously. In fact, one year I was really having some problems with a batch of sick broilers and I gave them 2 waterers-one water and one vinegar. They sucked that vinegar one dry as fast as I could fill it. I wouldn't try vinegar or mixed vinegar in a galvinized waterer though. Gerbil

You can find real unfiltered cider vinegar at health food stores and some food co-ops.
