Pen breeding rabbits

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone here pen breed their rabbits. I found cage breeding to be beyond difficult. Does having their babies on the wire. Constant hassle with breeding. To me it was very ineffective. I know all the traditional advice is for cages. I just don't buy it. My idea is to build a chicken wire bottomed pen with two cages in the middle and loose hay bales all around. The cages hold the bucks. The does run free and once bred are allowed a little more natural life. Babies are butchered or sold as they reach breeding age, with a fryer cage outside for holding purposes. Has anyone else tried this? the buuck cages would be a little raised, perhaps on hay bales arranged so that waste could fall down underneath.
