Train Accident in Indonesia Leaves 32 Dead

(Updated at 1905 PST)

JAKARTA: At least 32 people, most of them children were killed and 21 injured on Wednesday in a freight train derailment in Indonesia's West Sumatra province, reported sources.

The train, a coal-carrier, was loaded with children and their parents who were on their way home after enrolling for the new school term in the capital of Padang. About 80 people had hitched a ride on the train's eight coal cars because the road to their homes was closed for repairs.

The train derailed in the Batang Anai sub-district of Padang Panjang, some 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the capital. "When dusk fell, the official toll of the accident stood at 32 people ... most of whom were riding the train because the usual land road is still being repaired," said an official.
