Traders Hit by Power Blackout

Source: Evening Mail Publication date: 2000-06-27

A MAJOR power failure knocked out scores of businesses and shops in the centre of Redditch.

Up to 1,050 customers were left without electricity following an underground high voltage cable fault shortly after 2pm yesterday .

Mr Phil Berry, assistant manager at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, said about 25 businesses within the scheme were affected, including Tesco, Woolworths and Superdrug.

But he added: 'Most were able to trade normally as they have their own generators. The rest of the Kingfisher centre was not affected.'

A spokesman for MEB said the fault caused blackouts for shops and houses in Summer Street, parts of Evesham Road, Market Place, Market Street, Church Green East and Lodge Road.

MEB officials worked to correct the fault and power was restored to customers in batches by late afternoon.
