Cable Failure Leaves 6,500 Without Electricity

Source: The Record, Northern New Jersey Publication date: 2000-06-28

A cable failure led to a power outage that left about 6,500 customers without electricity for a little more than an hour Tuesday. Kathy Ellis, a spokeswoman for Public Service Electric and Gas Co., said the outage was the indirect result of a car accident Monday night in which a vehicle struck a utility pole.

To repair damage from the crash, the utility had to take one of two 26,000-volt power lines out of service.

Then at 12:13 p.m., the remaining line experienced a cable failure, leaving a large section of the city without power until 1:25 p.m.

The cable failure was mechanical and not related to heat or demand, Ellis said.
