I only wish cpr were more coherent. I may take a while to make a point, but at least the point is made in the minds of those patient enough to suffer through all the development. So I'm attuned to a point being developed, but cpr's posts never seem to board a train of thought. I'm left suspecting I might agree, if only I knew what I might be agreeing with.

Far below, I have included some ACTUAL BANK STATEMENTS from their own hands or the SEC 10K filings. Let those who worry about the BANKING SYSTEM go there first. AND...let those who peddle fear go read those numbers first.Recently, this list has seen some postings about economic turmoil and the end of civilization as we know it. Such postings are more suited for the usenet groups where the masses display their intellectual voids and vacancies. And those who see Year 2000 as a stock speculator's dream may need to hone their skills in Atlantic City first.
In the absence of FACTS, all of this is FEAR MONGERING AND HYSTERIA driven by sheer unadulterated IGNORANCE. Sen. Alphonse's tongue re: the FED. would do better sampling pasta sauce and let him take that symbol of Political High Tech,Mr. Gore out for dinner with him. I posted the Reuter's story on NY Al; because I thought it was ludicrous. Similarly, if the Vice President knew anything aside from posing near his PC and playing with his mouse, he would have been "issuing statements" on YEAR 2000 long ago, instead of worrying about owls or "green issues". But he is another of the Private Club of Wastrels in Washington who need an issue. Where were the 2 Als five years ago, when the Banks were begining to get serious about repairing the Y2K problems?? Why have we not heard from him as the Insurance Companies tidied up their Annuity Programs???
In fact, how come they couldn't just read the Y2K Gospel according to Peter de Jager circa: 1994???
The Utilities FALL BACK POSITION
Some have suggested that the Power Grid might fail. HAS ONE SINGLE PERSON CALLED EPRI, a Utility OR EVEN THEIR LOCAL UTILITY REGULATORS??? NO...ALL HEARSAY AND MYTH AND CONJECTURE.
The GRID will not fail. IF...there were any concern about the ability of the GRID to produce power on Ultimate Midnight.. the Utilities themselves would insist that ALL PEOPLE go into "Brownout mode"and probably starting in Summer of 1999!! Cut back and do as our Grand Parents in the Depression did.....TURN OUT ALL THE UNNECESSARY LIGHT BULBS, set the thermostats back to 55 at night and get out extra blankets.WORSE,,,NO TV for a day or so. Now that's "suffering". NO...the UTILITY COMPANIES will not fail us. AND...that includes the Phone Companies. Mother and the Kids will not let us down because they will adapt the same strategy. When in doubt, cut back.
FOOD STOCKS
As the possible shortages of Year 2000 become obvious and know this...it will be IMPOSSIBLE TO HIDE THEM.... concern about food, fuel and water might become an issue. WHAT IS THE WORST CASE??? In the US, we might have to evoke a "National Emergency" even to the point of Martial Law and RATION EVERYONE. THAT is "worst case".
Do... YOU...really think so??? I...think NOT!!! In every crisis since the Boston Massacre, Citizens of this Nation have banded together when necessary. THAT is what will happen. NOT "riots in the city" or some scene out of a bad movie shown far too late at night or on Saturday afternoon. Think about what we have EVERY YEAR: Floods, Hurricanes, Fires, Earthquakes (why California is populated at all mystifies me daily) Tornadoes (Local Texas specialty) Drug drive by shootings and on and on..
And what happens every time??? People band together and SET THINGS RIGHT!!! Consider the rescue efforts in Oklahoma City and worry NO MORE.
As for other nations... the U.K. will probably show us all how to do it and stop daily for tea whilst doing so. People will rise to the job while the Fear mongers change their briefs!!

One by one, I could decimate the musings of these Ignorant Fear Mongers. All the conjurings of their minds stem from lack of facts. BUT...Corporations who are working on Year 2000 do not invite in the Blabbermouths of the Press because Year 2000 is Coroporate Dirty Underware being washed, cleaned and pressed. PERIOD. The Fear Mongers have to get a grip and while doing so perhaps....GET A LIFE !!!
MOST rational people would accept that the efforts depicted on www.ibm.com are evidence that IBM is working on Year 2000 for and with its customers. Over 70% of the worlds' business information reposes on IBM ware. IBM has well over 225,000 people and it is not possible that the IBM efforts are a scam. Someone would run posthaste to the Press and say, "Nobody is doing anything and the Banks are going to fail. Its a conspiracy." Who...is the largest Technology Vendor to the BANKING Institution??? Who better knows the meaning of the words "NON DISCLOSURE" than IBM. THAT is why these FEAR PEDDLARS claim all is to end on 01/01/2000. They simply don't know. And "DON'T KNOW" is IGNORANCE.
Let us all be rid of this claptrap and flame them away!! OR get your 12 year olds to do it. What few mention in the Fear Mongering set is that there were valid reasons involving the evolution of the Technology that dictated waiting to fix some Y2K problems. If the fixes had been implemented too soon, they might have been obsolete by 1995 with the entrance of the viable Internet for commerce. We will never know. We do know that some Banks and other Enterprises DID enable their systems for Year 2000 as the Event Horizons came.
But...the idea that the Hoover Dam of Society is to break and drown us all is LUDICROUS. WESTERN MAN built our society ...often one brick or stone at a time since the glory days of Athens.
Western Man also fueled the Computer Revolution with Intellectual Capital and we now stand at the very Apex of that Revolution watching another great Tidal Wave of Advance come. YEAR 2000 DATE CHANGES ARE A JOB TO BE DONE. Some Companies will not do their JOB... and they will get SICK or even DIE OFF.....but LIFE will go on.

Let the sloppy companies lose to the Year 2000 enabled and....let them go quietly without crying to the DC Wastrels for help. Then their employees can go to work for good companies who will be so busy with new customers they will hire day and night.
Some of the Fear Mongers have stated that the Banking System is not going to operate because of Y2K failures. They cite Chase and CitiCorp expending of hundreds of millions for the Y2K flu shots and TREMBLE..
BANKING...WHAT ARE THE FACTS???
Lets go to the NET... Lets see some examples. LETS GET THE FACTS. The facts seem to be that these people spend so much on Technology that our only concern should be "How high is the stock of the Prime Vendors going to go in the next few years" Because it seems as though these Enterprises spend TEN TIMES MORE ON TECHNOLOGY in ONE year than they will spend on Y2K in FOUR. Put another way... 40 for normal expenses for every dollar for Y2K. AND...as a percent of their EARNINGS... why do you think they have such nice tall buildings???
Will "some" banks fail?? YES. But.."some" banks fail every year. Nobody pays attention. Last but not least, if anyone ever knows about Banks failing, Texas does. But did the system fail under the stress of the 1985-1989 Massacre?? GET REAL.

CITICORP. Now here one might be concerned in light of the fact that they only finished off 1/2 of the top of their building years ago..(no matter what that Architect said)

BUT...look at the numbers from the SEC 10K below: Its in Millions such that: 7,406 means 7.406 BILLION.(I looked at the entire 10K..1/2 meg. to find the Technology expenses to put this in perspective but it was not there).
