Phone Troubles Trip Up SEC's EDGAR System
WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S.A., 2000 JUN 19 (NB) -- By Brian Krebs, Newsbytes.
The Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) system for disseminating company disclosure documents was crippled today when a phone line used to transmit the documents unexpectedly shut down, a commission official said.
SEC Spokesman John Heine said the commission's much-used EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval) database was unavailable from 8 to 10:30 a.m. today, when Bell Atlantic and TRW contractors repaired the line. Heine said the SEC's Web site was unaffected by the outage.
The SEC experienced similar problems last week, and in December 1999, Heine added.
EDGAR performs automated collection, validation, indexing, acceptance, and forwarding of submissions by companies and others required by law to file forms with the SEC.
EDGAR and the SEC can be found online at http://www.sec.gov
