Multi Contrast filters

Can anyone comment on whether there is any difference in the image quality of multicontrast papers, either resin or FB, when using graded filters by another manufacturer. Eg Agfa multicontrast with Ilford filters. Will the same black density be acheived.

They should all work the same. WRT black density should not be affected by the filters.

You may find that the contrast range is slightly different for a given "grade" of filter.

BTW you can also use just plan color printing filters, and just use yellow and magenta. In fact that will give you a finer gradiation of contrast ranges. And you don't need to mix them unless you don't want to deal with making exposure time corrections for changing filters. Using these you get out of "grades" and into the right amount of contrast range for the negative you are printing.

I think it is more or less convenience that makes you use filters and paper from the same manufacturer, as the manufacturer often mixes some neutral density into his filters to make all grades equally fast (or slow). I think some paper manufacturers don't even offer specific filters. They just state the ISO contrast ranges and paper speeds achieved when using either filters of a particular brand or just Y and M filters.
