OJ across America

Li sa mentioned in the Grateful Dead forum that she and her husband were on the road to DC during OJ's great slow-speed getaway in 1994.

Where were you?

I was sitting in the Games room at the Faculty Club, watching it on the big screen television - and we were all wondering out loud why on earth the police didn't just shoot his back tires out, or pull up next to him and force him off the road.

I was hanging out in New York with a bunch of my college friends. We hadn't seen each other since graduations. We were in my aunt's apartment, and I just happened to turn on the TV. After a few minutes, my friend Angela put on a CD of Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" which was the perfect accompaniment to the event.

I was in my first NYC apartment, alone, yapping on the phone. I think I was mad because they interrupted the basketball game or Melrose Place or something equally wonderful.

I was in San Francisco, visiting my aunt. I believe the chase started when we were on the airplane...I remember it was the big news the first day we were there.

i was actually at a grateful dead show, in eugene. more accurately, i was in the parking lot, hanging with friends and buying beaded ankle bracelets. we were all highly amused that the whole oj thing had become so pop culture that even people at a dead show were tuned into his every move.

I was at my parents' house, watching it with my entire family, as my grandparents were down for a visit. My grandmother wanted to go to bed, but it was just so oddly riveting that she waited for something to happen. Finally, she leaned over and whispered in my ear, 'Either S-H-I-T or get off the pot,' and headed for bed. I remember that so clearly, because I never heard her swear and it was so funny to me that she spelled out 'shit'.

The scene is still so clear to me. I was 7 months pregnant and was sitting at my computer. My husband watching tv a few feet away. They broke in on whatever he was watching to show the slow-speed chase. I got offline and sat on the couch with him. We were so mesmerized, we watched the story unfold all...the...way...to...the...bitter...end.

Before the actual chase, during that weird press conference in which his inferred that perhaps he'd committed suicide, my roomate and I were getting dressed to go out. We drove into the city and didn't think much about it. The first stop for the night was her company's office party at a club on Arch St. She worked for large national pager company, therefore everyone in the place had one. As soon as the chase started there were nevending beep beep beeps, all of the pagers were receiving the news updates. there we were, standing at the bar reading about the chase on various beepers. those news services updated almost every 5 minutes that night. weird.

do you remember that Judge Ito announced that a verdict had been reached and that it would be read the next day? I knew about that from a beeper too. I was sitting in a bar at the Philly airport with the aforementioned roommate and her beeper. In an odd twist, we were there because I was flying to LA. I must admit I was a teensy bit worried that I'd be in a war zone the next day.

I was actually online on a BBS (ISCA BBS, in fact). I got all my news updates via the posts there. I could have gone and watched it on TV, but I didn't think it was that interesting. :)

My best friend Alicia and I were flopped down on the floor in my apartment eating ice cream and pounding fuzzy navels like they were water. I had the apartment, she was over 21.. it was the perfect relationship. Her boyfriend Chris was there and had brought his best friend Aaron to try to fix him up with me. We both ignored the men and watched the Bronco until we got blitzed enough to start hurling comments at the TV and then it was a group free for all commentary session. Alicia ended up adjourning with Chris to the spare bedroom after all the OJ fun wound down and I woke up the next morning with a fuzzy memory of having made out with Aaron in my kitchen and the worst flu I've ever had in my life..

I blame OJ.

I was at a baby shower. I walked in a little late and everyone was glued to the screen. It was by far the better entertainment option, although it got tedious rather quickly.

When they announced the verdict, everyone at work (small office, about 12 of us) gathered upstairs to watch TV. Our token perfect blonde was horrified he got off, and vocalized her distress immediately. My three African-American co-workers remained perfectly silent.

I was meeting a date for a midnight movie at the Angelika, and in the meantime was having a few beers at the dive bar Pheobe's, watching the basketball game. The night only got weirder...

I spent an evening at a friend's house, much profound drinking had ensued by the time we turned on the telly to witness the white bronco footage and the sound bites made us giggle. Over the next few days we snickered at one another and said to each other,"This is AC, I have OJ in the car...this is AC, I still have OJ in the car....Just in case you were wondering...I have OJ in the car."

I was doing some seriously excellent Peruvian while simulantaneously having the best sex of my entire life with a Japanese actress (whose name I promised not to reveal here.) Then we sat in the Jacuzzi and watched the chase on my twelve-foot big-screen tv with full-THX Surround-Sound in my mansion while my team of personal French chefs whipped us up a double batch of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and lukewarm Dos Equis beer.

(some parts of this anecdote have been slighty exaggerated for literary purposes.)

Having a fantastic time with my future wife at a Meatloaf concert just outside of Boston.

I was in Wuhan, People's Republic of China, listening to the BBC on my short wave radio, I was wondering who on Earth this guy was they were making such a fuss about (I had never been to the US at that time). The guy from the BBC didn't appear to know waht the big deal was, either. So I called my American girlfriend who was then living in Shanghai (where we met) and asked her about it. She explained to me who O.J. was. We're married now and living in the US.

I was watching the Knicks- Houston NBA finals and I was p.o.'d as all get up because they interrupted the game so much. I even call the staion in West Palm is was so mad. I can still see Patrick Ewing's last shot fall short. Oh well.

If I remember correctly, I was in Duluth, Minnesota, with my boyfriend Nimbus, who was running in Grandma's Marathon the next day. He was trying to watch a Bulls game and it got preempted by the chase.

-- Cindy (cindy@kismet.cx), June 30, 2000.

Apparently, it was a Knicks game. See Cindy not care sufficiently about her boyfriend's sports obsessions...
