80-200 2.8l tripod collar

using a 80-200 2.8L with an eos 5+vg10. my tripod combo is a bogen 3021 with 3055 ball head. the vg10 sits lower than the tripod collar on the lens. due to the large bogen hex plate, i have to mount the camera on the ball head and not the lens, not very stable. any ideas for a fix?

Answers

The only solution I could come up with was to remove the VG-10 for tripod shots.

I had the exact same problem with a different lens but same equipment otherwise. I was able to make a sort of adapter with a piece of 1" x 1/4" flat aluminum stock about 1 1/2" long. Basically all I did was drill a 1/4" hole towards 1 end and ran a 1/4-20 bolt thru it into the tripod collar and a tapped 1/4-20 hole in the other end (towards the front of the lens) to which I attached the hex plate. This sets the whole rig back far enough to clear the VG-10. And you can probably make it in less time than it took me to type this response;-) Jim

This is an old thread, but I had the same problem with my 80-200 2.8L and 300 4L. Before I got a new head and used the Bogen 3055 as a paper weight, I just flopped the stem (plate riser) into the notch on the socket for vertical shots.
