BellSouth outages disable online accessService problems block customers' connections for more than 24 hours 06/14/2000 From Staff Reports
Customers of BellSouth's Internet service in the Southeast lost online access Tuesday during multiple service outages.
At 2 a.m. Tuesday, BellSouth began experiencing problems with its MyWay home page, preventing customers from connecting to the Web site. At 4:25 a.m., more problems developed, disabling all online access, including e-mail service, for some customers.
The problems continued throughout Tuesday but were resolved by 5 a.m. today according to a message on BellSouth.net's Web page. Fixing the problem involved replacing a BellSouth e-mail server at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, said BellSouth spokesman Dave Hargrove. That replacement technically solved the problem, but so much e-mail had piled up in the hours the prior server was down that BellSouth's network slowed down Tuesday, he said.
Customers' ability to connect to the Internet or post messages to the BellSouth.net news groups has been restored in full, according to the BellSouth Web page.
Hargrove said Tuesday's problems were rare.
