Story Filed: Wednesday, June 14, 2000 3:50 AM EST

TOKYO, Jun 14, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- The Internet-linked i-mode mobile phone service offered by NTT DoCoMo Inc (TSE:9437) suffered its 12th nationwide failure around midnight Tuesday, affecting 7.54 million subscribers.

Net connections failed and e-mailing was disrupted.

At about 11 pm, the glitch struck at the i-mode center in Ota Ward, Tokyo, according to the cellular phone operator. Many subscribers could only access online services once, despite trying many times, until the problem was rectified around 1:20 am on Wednesday, NTT DoCoMo said.

The i-mode service has suffered a series of breakdowns since March, d ue to heavy traffic loads. NTT DoCoMo has been expanding capacity and limiting new subscriptions to cope. Believing the traffic problems were resolved, the company resumed accepting subscriptions on June 1.
