greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

whatever happened to-
Kevin (mail@bawstin.com)
Ray (ray@totacc.com)
Kevin (mixesmusic@worldnet.att.net)
PJ Gaenir (fire@firedocs.com)

especially interested in knowing if "Ray" is still around.....read that thread and you will see just how funny at least ONE of the extreme doomers was(is)!

I don't know about any of the rest, but Kevin mixedupmusic changed his "name" to Linkmeister, then after roll-over, he uses many different names....won't stick to just one. You can always tell him tho'...same .gov cut and paste of L-O-N-G boring articles!

Interesting. So that's what you folks had to put up with back in 4/99, huh?

I guess I missed the "suggestions" thread, but I do enjoy these retrospective looks at how things were. Strange that Hamasaki hasn't chosen to weigh in with a WRP or other commentary on how all those basket case IT systems that do "the world's heavy lifting" somehow didn't even hiccup despite all the doomer essays and NO "polly" counterpoint.

I guess Cory is one of those sensible, worldly guys who recognized that his market window closed (he charged good money for his opinions on y2k) and moved on, a bit richer than when he started.

Ray was always comic relief. In over 1000 posts, he never once presented an original idea, much less an interesting idea. I miss him.

Bemuzed:

Yeah, the realists had to put up with a lot of garbage from the pessimists. It went on for months. The "sysops" certainly didn't do anything to try and help out those of the opposing viewpoint...only those who envisioned doom were accepted.

Flint:

I suspect that Ray is still here, smarting over his own ass-holiness from last year, but STILL attacking anyone he doesn't agree with! (maybe "Hawk"?.....who knows?) I agree that Cory is pretty smart and has "moved on" to other ventures....hopfully more...er...profitable than his y2k scam was!

Interesting how everybody on this thread except for Flint is anonymous.

-- I guess I'll (be@nonymous.too), June 10, 2000.

Although a fan of Flints, Ive never seen any proof that his/her real name IS Flint. E-mail addys are what ever you want them to be. Just a reaflection.

-- Ra (tion@l.1), June 10, 2000.

Ra, if you've found no proof then you haven't looked. The proof is readily available to anyone with internet access. Your post is a reaflection (sic) of laziness leading to false conclusions.

Here's my favorite post, fom "Chuck, a night driver" :

Got a brother who twiddles bits (NOT BYTES) for a living, now working
on development for some Son-of-Firewire (IEEE-Whatever) firmware.
Built some Navy Firecontrol software, had a BIG piece of their
Workstation Architecture project, and knows almost as much about ADA
as any breathing human (piece of 2 compilers and one Compiler
validator across 3 services), and did some Web stuff for one of the
soon to be fewer Baby Bells. He as much as told me that I had a
serious plexiglass porthole requirement (ABOVE the navel) when I
mentioned Ed's current writings. The quote was "Yeah I've read it,
but most of us have said 'So' and moved on."
This can be highly frustrating. I suspect that he would NOT be even
remotely interested in taking the challenge. i suspect the reason is
that he and the rest simply do NOT see a reason for all of the fuss,
and without a reason for fuss, why should they consider the writing
effort to be worthwhile?

Ra:

With only simpleminded effort, I found myself in several people finders. I found my college degrees, my address, my phone number, even a map showing the location of my house. After a while, you either conclude I'm not very anonymous, or that I have somehow managed to fake all these sources for a very long time. Up to you.

Nobody has ever given me a good answer to why they remain anonymous anyway. Who do they think they're hiding from, and why? Hey everybody, drop by if you're in the vicinity. We'll be glad of your company.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), June 10, 2000.

Are you saying that with your e-mail addy and the name Flint only, all of that info you stated could be found?

-- Ra (tion@l.1), June 10, 2000.

Ra, I was able long ago to verify Flint's first and last name and creds with no further info than he has openly provided in his TB2000 posts. You will have to figure it out for yourself, although I imagine if you contacted flint via email he would probably tell you. Yes, Flint is his real name.

Flint, my use of anonymity is long-standing. I attracted a cyberstalker a few years ago from using my real name/email. That person managed to cyber follow me across several fora, as well as intrude into my real life. I'm glad that you've had no such problems, and hope that continues to be the case.

I think the comment about anonymity referred to the fact that the other posters were using made up names that none of us had ever seen before. I don't consider myself anonymous in this environment.

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), June 11, 2000.

Dancr, you have stated:

I don't consider myself anonymous in this environment.

I dont consider you anonymous in ANY environment. Your handle directs the reader to your web site where we see an old airbrushed picture of Tracie and more personal info than anyone would care to know. You dont appear to be selling anything so it stands to reason that you are either an ego-megalomaniac or just starved for attention.

Thanks for the response teapot. I guess Ive never been that curious about folks on this forum to try and find information about them.

-- Ra (tion@l.1), June 11, 2000.

From: Preparations, ` la Carte (pic), near Monterey, California

FWIW, I don't consider Ra to be anonymous, either, since that's a well known handle of the "person" who surfaces from time to time since rollover to fulfill their apparent life purpose, to ridicule certain regular forum participants. Anyone who doesn't care to view my two-year-old photo (modified only to obviously splice in the Monalisa background), doesn't have to click my well labeled link to get there. At least I didn't have the nerve to name myself after a god.

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), June 11, 2000.

Actually dancr I surfaced on the old TB2000 forum in the fall of 1998 and was a regular polly poster under a different handle or two. I never posted at GNIABFI or the debunker sites but I did agree with most of their viewpoints, namely that doomers like yourself should not be allowed outside. I took major flack from folks like you so now its my turn to speak my mind without concern that the Yourdon thought police will delete on sight. BTW, I may be rather caustic at times but that is me in person and it works well in my real life. I can also be quick to compliment when I see fit so heres one for you. Ive always admired your involvement in Home Schooling and the value of that practice has received some much-deserved attention lately, has it not?

Now allow me to give you a small lesson. My handle is designed to read Rational One. There was never any intended reference to the sun god Ra and hopefully this will clear things up for you. Hows the action at Sunset Beach these days?

Ra said: ...I did agree with most of their viewpoints, namely that doomers like yourself should not be allowed outside. I took major flack from folks like you so now its my turn...

No matter who you were last year, I was busy NOT giving you flack, neither individually, nor as a group, whether "deserved," or not, neither then nor now. I know there are plenty of people who did, but I was not one of them. You dished it then, and you're still dishing it.

"who is Ancient Lurker (from@early.98), June 09, 2000. " Here is your answer, Z.

My name is William, for what that is worth. I won't say more than that. I have had problems with hacking and stalking in the past; all because of newsgroups and forums like this one. A forum I posted on got "transferred" to new control, and I became one of many targets. So I only post with anonymizer and do NOT give any real e-mail address.

I did follow Timbomb 2000 forum since early 98. I never used a consistent "handle" and I rarely posted. I was called a troll by Diane Squire and she tried to "out" me..for the simple reason that I questioned someone with an extreme doom viewpoint AND used anon...and my preminision about being caught in a "firestorm" on the internet was proven correct. The entire time Mr. Ed Yourdon ran the forum, I enjoyed the discourse but I could see the lines being drawn. Its like watching 2 people try and talk politics "in a civil manner" at a dinner party, one wearing a democrat pin, the other a 'republicans forever' pin. You just know what is coming!

I suspected that someone who viewed y2k as an "our side VS their side" war would try and make life tough for those they saw as the "enemy". It happened on both sides of the discussion, didn't it?

Trust me Z, when you have been burned like I have, you learn to cover your bases from then on.

I hope that is a good enough answer for you, because it is all your going to get from me.

-- Ancient Lurker (from@early.98), June 12, 2000.

Good ol' Ray. Talk about one paranoid dude!!! He truly believed I was an industry shill when in reality I was only managing a couple of successful Y2K projects. Ray just couldn't handle good news, period. I was actually kind of flattered that he thought I was planted here by some secret organization to poison the minds of preppers.

Thanks for the hilarious trip down memory lane!!

Hey, Deano! Congrats on the projects! Was BB elevated to true Goddess status in the post-Rollover euphoria?

I actually did my Y2K mea culpa on another thread, but you deserve a direct response: you were right about potential impacts and I was way wrong. Taught me to have a bit more faith in the abilities of some of my colleagues and the overall robustness of the IT infrastructure.

Looks like it'll be another donnybrook this year in the AFC Central. JAX and the Titans will spend the regular season whomping on everyone else (oh, how I wish the Bungles played in the AFC West...) and then having to battle it out with each other in the playoffs.

-- DeeEmBee (macbeth1@pacbell.net), June 12, 2000.

Thanks D!

BB has moved on to greater things (as we all have I reckon). She's heading up our international business group. We recently purchased BBBS (Bradford and Bingley Building Society, I think???) outside of London and we're rewriting our USA standard of mortgage software for the UK. Should prove quite interesting to say the least!

Can't wait for the season to start. Jags should be right back up there at the end. But, as I've said before, if we can't beat Tennessee, it don't matter a bit - 3 losses all last year, ALL TO THEM TITANS!!

Ya know I kept saying all last year (and the year before) that I had hundreds (literally hundreds) of documents, from all types of organizations that were saying they had licked Y2K......what else was I supposed to believe?? Andy and Hardliner (BIG GRIN)???
