Bubble Bobble situation

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

OK - I can't playback ANY windows bubble bobble recording.

so I see the following ideas:

a. Bubble(the person), told me that bublbobl has protection bugs still(although I never saw it), and that we should use boblbobl. Maybe the windows stuff can playback using this rom? If so - maybe we should permit it? (this would apply to everyone of course - and perhaps we should also allow bublbobl if recorded as well.)

b. We can throw out the game... probably a bad idea... but it's there.

c. We can replace the game with the next item in the list.

d. We can replace the game with a different platform - next on the list.

I vote for a.

I await opinions on this frustrating issue(at least for me :) )

I would vote for a, but i doubt the recordings would playback under a different romset. If not i'd vote for c.

I'd love to see Bubble Bobble stay, but I don't think allowing Windows users to record on Bobble Bobble would be fair. Because if I'm not mistaken, Bobble Bobble is actually easier since there are certain enemies that do not shoot at you. This makes a BIG difference on a lot of the later stages. So I don't know what to do about that...

Well, actually, it is quite unfair as it is. As stated before, Bubble Bobble still has protection errors, and one that DOES affect gameplay is the 'letter order' bug. In the bootlegs, which have no protection, you'll notice that letters come in 2 groups, either E(red),T,N or E (green),X,D. These letters then change at the 'Hurry Up' message. This allows greater planning on how to get your extra lives, and thus makes it easier. The current emulation in mame, due to protection errors, just throws letters at random (?) with no order whatsoever. I belive this is why the boblbobl set was chosen at Deca2000, it's easier but it's accurate. As for making it easier or harder, well, it makes it easier or harder for everyone, so the tendency will for players to keep their positions/points awarded, only the scores will be higher and the games longer. This, IMHO, does not represent a problem so I'de vote for a).

err, after second reading, I now see that GB was proposing that ONLY the windows users would record on the boblbobl set. That is indeed unfair for us poor command-line addicts :)

I thing an option is missing:

e)Drop the bublbobl set and replace it with the boblbobl set for all players

If such an option isn't acceptable, then I'de go for d)

evidentally I misphrased A. A should be replace bublbobl with bublbobl for EVERYONE - but the bublbobl recordings if they playback stand. (but would that still be a disadvantage for the windows player? If so - change my vote to e :) )

-- Gameboy9 (goldengameboy@yahoo.com), June 08, 2000.

I vote for gb94s a) but of course ALL must play on bobble bobble then.. it is easier and that4s fair for for everyone :)

And then i suppose my vote vill be e) then ehh?

Bobble instead of Bubble for everyone seems fair. I go for (a).

Else, next game on the list is...Ghost'n Goblins, so (d) won't bother me much either. QRS will surely agree :)

I think I found out why the recordings are not working on Bubble Bobble. They are hybrids!!!

Follow me on this example...

You have a regular mame, example 36final to play most games. You download and use WinTG35v3 for the tournament games. During switching between each edition, the system asks you if you wish to use the new set. Now, here is where the recordings go to pot... You are in WinTG35v3, but using the settings from 36final. Which means only if you recreate the same exact circumstances would it playback. I am suprised we haven't had more recordings like this. Also note, it will take the TGMame checker and make it return a result of NOT recorded on TGMAME, even though it is.

This only happens if you say NO to using the defaults.

NO! No more GNG please... Ahem... a) seems to be the fairest, but that does mean that players of boblbobl are advantaged by a slightly easier set. There's a setting for monster speed isn't there? How about a choice of Bubble Bobble on default settings or Bobble Bobble with monster speed up one notch?

I've vote that we just switch to boblbobl instead of bublbobl for everyone. It's not fair to give DOS users the choice of 2 varients and windows users only one choice. That's 'e' I think.

And Chris Parsley: you wrote "This only happens if you say NO to using the defaults" - are you saying that bublbobl recordings only fail to play back in the windows version if you say NO to 'use the defaults'? I'd argue with that, since I just downloaded the windows mame-tg3, told it to use the defaults, made a recording, and it wouldn't play back. Have you been able to play back any windows-tg3 bublbobl recordings at all yourself?

Chris.

It's an interesting problem. I recorded a bobble bobble recording for Deca2000 which plays back fine. Any since that one won't play back at all, and I don't know what I did in between. I do know that I have MAME32TG and MAME32v36 on my PC, but I can't remember if I took defaults or not when switching from one to the other.

I wonder if removing all MAME32 settings from the registry or wherever and reloading MAME32TG would solve the problem. I'll investigate when I get home from work.

As for bubble bobble, I've not tried it. So it might apppear that the same problem exists for both romsets. bugger.

Ben Jos was able to playback your boblbobl recording - so that's not a problem there.
