June 7, 2000 Misdirected 911 Calls Studied

The Niagara County Legislature has begun looking into the problem of misdirected 9-1-1 calls made from cellular phones. Sheriff Thomas Belein says statewide cell service providers are creating confusion by not sending the emergency calls to the nearest sheriff's department. Belein has reported incidents in which 9-1-1 calls originating in Niagara County have been sent to Erie County, the Town of Clarence, and even Cattaraugus County.
