Can I play VCDs on a Philips CDI-490

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a Philips CDI-490. It is a commercial machine that was used to play audio CD-is. I have read at another website that this model did have a video cartridge already installed. Recently I have found several websites selling VCDs from Japan and Hong Kong that I would like to see. I don't have a DVD player so I was wondering if this machine would play VCDs. Thanks

yes, if you have the digital video cartridge, and the VCD's have the CD-i application burned on them.

The CDi-490 hasa built-in DVC, so it can play VCD's (and games which require a digital video cartridge) without any extra installations... it plays them right out of the box : )
