glass cleaner recipe

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The latest consumer report has an article on housecleaners. They tested a bunch of commercial brands a some homemade concoctions. Their homemade glass cleaner was as good, if not better than, commercial products. I haven't tried it yet, but here it is: 1/2 cup sudsy ammonia, 1 pint rubbing alcohol, and 1 teaspoon of hand dishwashing liquid, topped up with enough water to make a gallon. (A gallon of this stuff would last me for years at the current frequency of window washing at my house... :)

We have used ammonia and water in a sprayer and wipe down with newspaper. A good way to recycle newspaper around the house.

Thanks for the recipe. A gallon would last me a long time too! My windows only get cleaned when they have to be repaired. My excuse is that in this old house, if we opened the windows too much to clean them we wouldn't be able to close them back!!!LOL. I do miss the cross breezes though and am looking forward to replaicing the windows one of these days when I have so much money to spare that I can to it. HA! Has anyone ever tried that stuff that you are supposed to be able to use the hose and spray it on upstairs windows to get them clean? Sounds to good to be true so I haven't bought any. It would be nice to have a cleaner view though. Jennifer

We use to own a motel with hundreds of mirrors & windows! I bought the cheapest vinegar I could find on sale--we cleaned everything glass with vinegar! No chemicals for us or anyone else! We also used newspapers! The vinegar also cuts any smells in the room & left each room with a CLEAN smell! People were always eating in rooms & leaving the leftovers under the bed! I didn't always have time to put our commercial air purifier in the room --but when we got through cleaning with vinegar the room smelled CLEAN! We also finished off the faucets (after germ killing cleaner) with vinegar--they would shine! Sonda in Ks.

I used the spray with a hose product for outside windows once trying to save time and energy. It didn't. Definitely not worth it because they didn't get clean and I ended up doing them the old fashioned way. If I was tempted again, I'd use a plain hose of water.

Don't know where I got it, maybe CR years ago, but I have been using that formula for a long time. You will not get an "ammonia" smell - it is a small amount in the final product. Gene - "Try it - You'll like it!" Have I ever lied to you? (That you know of?) Oops! - preposition in the wrong place - 40 lashes with a wet noodle! GL!
