Retail Gasoline Price Hits New Record High Updated 5:04 PM ET June 5, 2000 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The national retail price for unleaded gasoline jumped 2.5 cents from last week to a record $1.563, the U.S. Energy Department's statistical agency reported on Monday. The pump price is up 45 cents a gallon from a year ago, based on the Energy Information Administration's weekly survey of 800 service stations. It is also the highest gasoline price since the EIA began tracking weekly fuel costs a decade ago.

The national price for unleaded gasoline has risen 11 cents over the last month, reflecting high crude oil prices, strong demand for gasoline and concern over low motor fuel inventories.

The current price is way above the peak $1.45 a gallon average the EIA has forecast for the summer driving season. The agency releases a revised forecast on Tuesday that is expected to show higher summer gasoline costs that previously thought.

West Coast drivers continued to pay the most for gasoline, with the price actually down 0.2 cents to $1.585 a gallon. The lower Atlantic states had the cheapest fuel, up 0.7 cents a gallon to $1.46.
