The Corona/AICN debacle

greenspun.com : LUSENET : No Extra Day : One Thread

Recently the differences in opinion regarding what responsibilities they have to the public, themselves, and other sites brought Corona Coming Attractions and Ain't it Cool News out of their Cold War. The basic idea, and forgive me for simplifying matters, is this:

Corona believes in classic journalistic integrity and Ain't it Cool News believes that it doesn't matter, it's their webpage to do with what they like.

Now I like rampant individuality as much as the next guy, but I also believe in honor. There are valid points to be made in either direction. Me personally, I believe that if you get that kind of a fan base you should respect them and treat 'em right. I think that both sides feel they are doing this. They are obviously going about it in different ways.

The main difference in this that I see is base motivation. Patrick wants to get the news out there accurately while Harry wants to entertain.

In other words, Patrick wants to be a journalist and Harry wants to be a rock star. The problem is this: They are both being lumped into the same category.

I never thought of Corona like I think of AICN. I would never tune into AICN for actual film information. That's like tuning into Springer for you news. It's not that I don't ever get in the mood for Springer, but I wouldn't call it journalism.

I don't think we'll be able to separate these two titans any time soon. I certainly don't think it will be solved here.

What I would like is to hear what you think.

Right now, having just read Harry's complete rebuttal (dated June 7), I'm of two minds about this.

If you're just tuning in, go read the links that Mike has thoughtfully provided to both Corona Coming Attractions and Ain't It Cool News. Then go read Harry's article from June 7.

I'll be back later when I have more time to work out my thoughts on this.

Besides, if my boss walks by my desk one more time and finds me screwing around instead of working, I'll be out of a job again. : )

Harry had the scoop first, chose not to post it immediately. Father Geek minced his words and caused the confusion. The fact is, Harry received the scoop first or at least on the same day.
