The interruption knocked out communication and control systems leaving subway trains and trams stuck fast.

The cut happened at 6.50 p.m. and lasted just a short time, but the repercussions were felt for many hours more.

The transport company managed to get trams up and running by 9 p.m. Subway trains weren't operating again until 10.30 p.m. as the underground network was also hit by a signalling problem.
