EOS 5 needs service? Help!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Following is my e-mail to B&H:

Subj: EOS 5 failure -- only 4 month old, first set of slides! Date: 6/3/00 12:01:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: LLoh688 To:

I took my first batch of slides with the new camera two weeks ago. Used Fuji Velvia & Kodak VS100 w/ 70-200 F4L & 28-70L. (wasted 15 rolls in the 'Narrow' at Zion Nat'l Park -- not happy) All pictures has on the left side of the slide -- 1/4 to 1/2 of frame streaked with red/orange color, there is also a red/orange oval the shape of the date print window on the lower right of the slide. I have an 630 and 1 for ~10yrs & never would've believed this can happend to an EOS camera. I purchased 7 yr warrenty from you at the time of order. Should I mail the camera to you? Mack Camera/Video? or contact my local EOS authorized service center? Please respond asap. Customer code: XXXXX. Control #: XXXXXX. I never had to service any of my EOS equipment, any help in directing me to get this problem solved is greatly appreciated. yours, lucian, Cleveland, OH

Unless Mack Camera & Video is a trusted camera shop, I mean really trusted, I would send your body to a camera repair shop that Canon recommends.

They will be albe to put it through the paces. This sounds like a warranty repair if it is still fours months old. Consult canon's web site for repair locations.

As for the Date function, I took the battery out of mine so that it would not function ever. You might consider the same. But, that has nothing to do with this problem.

According to Mack's web site their an authorized Canon repair center. If memory serves me correctly, they're also the outfit that B&H uses.

Send it to Canon. Even though it's grey market (The EOS 5 isn't sold by Canon in the USA), they'll still fix it under warranty. If it needs parts which are unique to the EOS 5 (i.e. different from the A2), you might be out of luck with Canon - that's the penalty you pay for grey market goods which are different from US models. At least talk to Canon first before you send it anywhere else.
