Power outages hit KC area

Near simultaneous - but unrelated - power outages across the area left about 2,800 homes and businesses without power for up to two hours Tuesday.

A bad splice in an underground fiber-optic cable shorted out power at 11:16 a.m. to 369 businesses and homes between 17th and 21st streets, and Washington and Cherry streets, said Tom Robinson, spokesman for Kansas City Power & Light. Repair crews restored power by 11:46 a.m.

About 91 customers in Johnson County lost their power at 11:33 a.m., when another underground cable failed. Power to the area, roughly bordered by Lackman Road, Interstate 35, and 101st and 107th streets, was restored by 1:45 p.m.

Robinson also said wind short-circuited a line around noon in the Northland, where power was restored to nearly 1,000 customers between Interstate 29 and Northwest Bell Road, Northwest 56th and Northwest 68th streets.

About 1,400 customers were affected when a private tree trimmer cut a transmission line near Ninth Street and Oakland Avenue in Kansas City, Kan.

The area affected was between Seventh and 18th streets, and State and Pacific avenues. Power was restored to most customers within half an hour, said a spokeswoman for the Board of Public Utilities.

One issue confuses me here, how does a fiber-optic cable cause a loss of power. Please don't tell me that the glass fiber transmits electricity, it doesn't.
