Zimbabwe: Nuclear waste in excess

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

PRETORIA -- The South African Nuclear Energy
Corporation (Necsa) yesterday said its Pelindaba
facility had inadvertently discharged a higher
than allowed amount of radioactive liquid waste
into the Crocodile River between April and June
last year. The Crocodile River flows into the
Hartebeespoort Dam near here.

The incident occurred as the result of "an
unfortunate error (which) crept into the
algorithm method used for calculating the amount
of radioactive material that Necsa is authorised
to discharge...under its existing licence", it said
in a statement.
