Steam Engine #1401 (Charlotte)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

Some relatives of ours just returned from the east with some pictures of the above engine. The pictures lack much detail and do not show complete views. Is there a website that includes the history and pictures of this locomotive. Also, there was a picture of an 0-4-0 with the name, JUPITER. I would be grateful for any help you could give me. Living in Portland, Oregon, I recently have become interested in Rails of the east including Norfolk/ Western, the Virginian, and Southern. Thanx.

The engine is in the Smithsonian National Transportation Museum. They may be able to provide you with pictures. I've been unable to find a website with good pictures.

Terry, There is a good head on picture of the 1401 on webshots.com that can be downloaded for wallpaper or a screensaver.

Have you learned anything new about #1401? I know someone that has a print of this train. Contact me via e-mail if you are interested.

1401 was one of the locomotives that pulled the funeral train for Franklin Delano Rosevelt.
