torn ear on goat

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Went out to feed tonight and one of my yearling nubians has torn her ear. It is torn almost a third of the way up from the bottom, with the torn part flapping in the breeze, held on by one small piece. Not bleeding, but I am afraid she will catch it again. Can I simply "snip" off the part that is dangling? sissy

I would think if it's just about ripped off now and is only held on by one small piece you could probably go ahead and finish the job. I'd say check where you would be cutting with a flash light and see if there are any veins there or not. Hold the flashlight behind the ear and see if the light penitrates (sp) thru it, giving you a better view. If there are not veins, do a clean cut and clean it good. I don't know, I hope I'm right on this but I've never had that problem before. It will be more of a nuisance to the goat if you leave it flapping. Don't know if taping it would help heal it or not. Now I've really confused you, haven't I?
