I have heard a lot of good things about I-Author for editing mpegs. Can Anyone direct me to where I can get a working version of this?

I-Author is not an mpeg editor. It is used for creating SVCD images that can be burned with adaptec.

You may be thinking of I-Film Edit. You can download a trial version from Cinax home site at www.cinax.com.
