Dog name help

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

...so I bought a dog today (female black miniature schnauzer) and need suggestions on what to name it. Anybody wanna help me out here?

Note: I've already done a web search of dog names and found some "possibles" but nothing really grabbed me. I'm looking for something somewhat unique and which has either 1 or 2 syllables (but no more than 2). I have no doubt that the clever minds that frequent this forum will be able to come up with some good ones.

(And "jumpoff joe" posted that this forum's subjects were boring. Guess I showed him huh!)

Thanks in advance,

Some of my pet dog's and cat's names over the years: Mufti, Mitsie, Maisie, Sophie, Buffy, Angela (Angie), Mopsie, Rennie, Heather......and one a little girl picked out years ago for her Schnauzer puppy--Zipper!

Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories!

LOL CD about the JOJ statement.

My brother had a mini-shnauzer he named his Bo Bo that was the meanest SOB that ever had four feet....!!!LOL

It bit me everytime I went over there. Bo hated children and basically was 'trained' to hate everyone in general...Bo played no favorites....

He was cute, but if you wanted to push bo's button all you had to do was point at him and go "bang" and instant attack....

Bo lived along time, but ended up being on doggy valium. :-) he was NOT for the faint of heart, but BEST watchdog I ever seen.

good luck in naming him and FWIW, I think this is a cute post.

for those who would like to know, how much did bo bo cost? Around $100.00 per pound. For real...

CD-

What does she look like? That should give you some possibilities? Is she a grand gal? How about MITZI? Very elegant-especially if you intend to groom her like a lady. They are very muscular dogs and can be hyper. Their hearing is much better than most dogs. What is is your heritage and could you tie that in to her personality and breeding? I HATE trying to name pets. I usually leave that to my spouse. But schnausers are GREAT dogs. They are ever so loyal, very loving, and long livers with few problems if they come from a good line. Also, they don't shed much and are very trainable. Good luck with your new member of he family and give her a smooch for me!

Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Gummo, Zeppo......take your pick!

My 7th grade science teacher, Mrs. Worthington, had a dog named Damocles. Rumor all over town had it that her nickname for him was Dammit...."c'mere, Dammit!" (true story, circa 1969-70)

My cousin used to have a gray miniature Schnauzer back in the 70's named Rush...cause he was so high-energy. Maybe .00001% body fat...

Another buddy has a dog named Rev....he's revved up all the time.

Another buddy had a German Shepherd named Samson...found him as a year-old, couldn't decide what to name him. STRONG son-of-a-gun. Had him tethered to a post on his porch, and the dog pulled the post slam out of the porch, the porch collapsed...hence the name.

How about "Cricket", I always liked that one.

I'd try going to this site:

http://silent-movies.com/Ladies/Ladies.html

It's a gathering of all the old silent movie stars. Wonderful old quaint names, names that have a dusty Hollywood glamour. If I had to name anything, I'd go to this site. They even had an animal silent stars section, but I didn't like "Sweetheart" and "Rin Tin Tin" so much as the plain old female star names.

Even if you weren't naming a dog, this site is worth checking out. Good luck!

CD,

Not a direct suggestion, but sinse your a Serpico lookin' kinda guy,why not watch the movie again and see if there ain't something appealing in it it that 'strikes' you well.It would be a great story to tell.

Or sinse there is a Serpico theme,Al Pacino played Serpico, thus the name Ali,pronounced like Ali Mcgraw.

Just my 2".

Pollie? Polly?

-- Cherri (sams@brigadoon.com), May 26, 2000.

Name her "Mallory" -- that way when anyone says her name she will think she's pretty. Pets know if their names are nice or if they're goofy.

Hey CapN-You have mistaken the identity of CD-I am the guy that you'all said looks like Serpico : )

Why Bingo, of course!

Choose a name you won't mind saying day after day for many years. Imagine you're wandering the neighborhood shouting this dogs name. You might even wish to practice this. OK so I'm a bit strange. :^)

When you narrow your choices you may wish to play a game with the family. Each member is to come up with as many nicknames, based upon a given name, as possible. This way you can weed out any problems that might crop up when the neighborhood dogs look to tease her.

Told you I'm strange!

Hi CD -

I used to have a dog named BoJo Jangles. I called him BoJo for short and Bo for shorter. I think it would work just as well for a female.

The dog I have now is named Anika (A-nee-ka). It's a West African tribal name that means "very beautiful." We call her Nika (nee-ka) for short.

-- Debra (what'sina@name.com), May 26, 2000.

I like the suggestion, Edith. You could shorten it to Ed.

You know, Ed, your dog? get it? huh? huh? get it? huh?

Wow, I knew you guys would be good at this. Some great stories and some great suggestions. I am... (be right back. The dog is biting a houseplant.) As I was saying, I am going to make a list from this thread of the best ideas so far and... (be right back. The dog is sniffin' and circlin' likes it's gotta "go".) Where was I? I'd like to reply to each one of your posts but... (be right back. The dog just knocked over it's water bowl.) Hmmm. I'd almost forgotten how much attention these critters require when their just puppies. I'll "try" to get back to ya later. Thanks again to all.

ps, wanna leg wrestle?

-- consumer (shh@aol.com), May 26, 2000.

Once had a three-legged dog named Typo. Also (yeah, some of them do not pass the syllable test) Pizza Hut, Kundalini, Bosco, Isis ... as well as cats named Fear City, Butter Butter Bite Bites, Eggburp, Panda Perp, Kohoutek, Zoe Baird, Hersheys and Hotpocket.

Let's see, names generated at first glance from this forum? I have always liked the sound of: Decker, Haiku, Fruitcake, Sleazy, Sumer, Doomer, kritter, Matrix, Polly, Hotmail, Bunker and 2K. Don't know if they pass the "call on the street" test, however. Was always afraid Butter Butter Bite Bites would get out and I'd have to yell the stupid name in front of the neighbors.

Anything that is not cute.

CD- Congratulations! We adopted an adorable 8 week old Cocker Spaniel last week. There was really no question about her name, it's my favorite drink- Moka. If you're game for a laugh, how about Skoda? :)

-- Gia (laureltree7@hotmail.com), May 26, 2000.

Name her Katherine and call her Kate. Katherine is nice when you're feeling lovey and Kate is easy to shout.

-- Carlos (riffraff@cybertime.net), May 27, 2000.

I like oxsys's "Bunker"...thats a kewl name fer a doomer dawg. Even fer a girl dawg. "Bunker, come here you doomer dawg you!" My girl dawg is Sheba. My son calls her "BAKWOOF"...not sure way..but he says it like a Klingon and it makes me laugh. My husband calls her "my little girl"...and she still manages to respond to all three... (my boy dogga, samson..he has several names too, but he has yet to respond to any of them) (one dogga, two doggages...thats how that works)

-- kritter (kritter@adelphia.net), May 27, 2000.

Kona.

It is my favorite coffee-fits the two syllable requirement, and seems like a good name for a doggie.

My vote is for Raven. My daughter named her grey cat Raven, and I never understood why. This could put that name to good use. An alternative might be Ebon...an abbreviated form of Ebony. Both names are gender inspecific, and reference the beautiful color of the animal.

We have a black dog, his name is Washington.

Our other dogs: Alex, Bailey, and Nippy.

Cats we've owned: Hemmingway, Charcoal, and Ritty Rat.

Our next dog will be a Jack Russell terrier, planned name: Roger

Good luck.

-- Aunt Bee (SheriffAndy@Mayberry.com), May 27, 2000.

Best advice I can give you -- skip the cute dog names and pick something that has meaning to you. And, don't pick anything ending in "Y"

I own a Border Collie; the "border" in Border Collie refers to the Scotish/English Border. I also have some Scottish ancestors. I named my dog after one of those families. I've never regretted it.

Having a dog named McAlister is a little unusual -- but he is generally called "Mac" and most people remember his name. And, it least it gives meaning to the name and is unique -- which something like "Rex" does not.

-- E.H. Porter (Just Wondering@About.it), May 27, 2000.

Having a new furbaby in the house is so much fun. Before I got the one I have now I had picked out two names, Magic and Comet. I thought I'd have a few days with him and see which name fit him best. In less than an hour in his new home it became apparent that his name should be Jazz. Sometimes a dog's personality dictates its name.

What NOT to Name Your Dog :-)

Author Unknown (I'm just contributing it to the thread)

Everybody who has a dog calls him "Rover" or "Boy." I call mine "Sex." He's a great pal, but he has caused me a great deal of embarrassment.

When I went to city hall to renew his dog license, I told the clerk I would like a license for Sex. He said, "I'd like one, too!" Then I said, "But this is a dog." He said he didn't care what she looked like. Then I said, "You don't understand, I've had Sex since I was 9 years old." He winked and said, "You must have been quite a kid."

When I got married and went on my honey-moon, I took the dog with me. I told the motel clerk that I wanted a room for my wife and me and a special room for Sex.

He said, "You don't need a special room. As long as you pay your bill we don't care what you do." I said, "Look, you don't seem to understand, Sex keeps me awake at night." The clerk said, "Funny- I have the same problem."

One day I entered Sex in a contest, but before the competition began, the dog ran away. Another contestant asked me why I was just standing there, looking disappointed. I told him I had planned to have Sex in the contest. He told me I should have sold my own tickets. "But you don't understand," I said, "I had hoped to have Sex on TV." He said, "Now that cable is all over the place, it's no big deal anymore."

When my wife and I separated, we went to court to fight for custody of the dog. I said, "Your Honor, I had Sex before I was married." The judge said, "The courtroom isn't a confessional. Stick to the case, please!"

Then I told him that after I was married, Sex left me. He said, "Me, too."

Last night Sex ran off again. I spent hours looking around town for him. A cop came over to me and asked, "What are you doing in this alley at 4 o'clock in the morning?" I told him that I was looking for Sex. My case comes up Friday!

Lilith ... name her LILITH!!

-- Debra (sorryshemademe@doit.com), May 27, 2000.

Sure, Debra...label her "naughty." Folks tend to live up to their labels, ya know. If this is CD's first female dog, he might be better off naming her Eve. [Somehow I suspect that CD has already named his dog. I know *I* couldn't go this long simply doing the "here, pup" routine.]

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), May 27, 2000.

Anita,

My son was called "Baby Boy (Smith) for three full days in the hospital because my (first)ex-husband and I could not agree on a name. I wanted Michael Christopher and he wanted to name him Adam after a bartender at the Jersey shore.

As fate would have it, whether I'm in Eve mode or Lilith mode, I am Adam's mother.

-- Debra (adameveand@lilith.com), May 27, 2000.

Debra:

Where was Lilith THEN? My ex and I agreed on naming our children classically Scandinavian names. Once that decision was made, the details were shared.....to a point. For the first, we agreed on the FIRST name, and I chose the middle name. For the second, *I* chose the first name, and HE chose the second name. For the boy, [the third], HE chose a name that he couldn't even pronounce right, at which point I decided that his input was insignificant considering that HE wasn't the one who had carried the child for nine months, nor was HE the one who would BIRTH the child. Of course by the time the third was born I had a good idea of the input regarding time spent with the children as well.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), May 28, 2000.

Please dear do let us know what happens on Friday... :-)

It is so good to see you post... Keep um coming.....

Ok CD, when are you going to let everyone know that your dog's name is "Boomer"?

Another idea (grin)...my grandma's dog is named Hershey. How about Hershey Squirt?! {giggle giggle giggle} =)

-- cin (cin@cin.cin), May 28, 2000.

LOL cin.

To all: I really appreciated all the name suggestions. You came up with some really good ones and a number of them went on my "final cut" short list. I came very close to deciding on a couple of 'em, but in the end I decided on the name "Beta". I'm not sure what the name would mean to *you*, (second to the "alpha" dog, or a test program with bugs yet to be worked out, or second letter in greek alphabet, or an astronomical star [Beta Pictoris], etc.), but it means something to me, and most importantly... as some of you have pointed out- I can shout it out loud through the neighborhood without too much embarrasment in the event she ever runs off and I have to go in search of ;)

Thanks again to all who contributed.

-- CD (costavike@hotmail.com), May 28, 2000.

CD, If its your only dog, why not just "dog"? I once had a cat. I called it "the cat". You can have one of each and still use those names. Where's the "dog". Wheres "the cat". Easy to remember. Call me sentimental....

-- FactFinder (FactFinder@bzn.com), May 28, 2000.

Fact:

Unless you have a dog that thinks it's a cat. Or a cat that thinks it's a dog. Your suggestion would not work at my house.
