Power Surge Causes Exploding Appliances

A fright for residents in the affluent Auckland suburb of Remuera, after their appliances began exploding just before six o'clock tonight. The problem's believed to have been caused by a massive power surge in the area.

The Fire Service says its been inundated with calls from people saying their ovens had been blowing up.

Fire chiefs are now liasing with power company staff.

There are no reports of major damage at this stage.

This time last May 1999 I remember reading somewhere that Y2K would produce results such as exploding appliances?????
