Train derailment sends tank car into Quebec river near dam

TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. (CP) - A Canadian National train derailed this morning, sending an empty tank car into the St-Maurice River where it floated toward a Hydro-Quebec dam.

A passer-by called police after noticing the tank car in the river. No one was injured, police said.

Railway, police and Hydro-Quebec officials were on the scene trying to contain the situation. Police said the tank car was floating about three kilometres north of the Beaumont dam.

The train derailed early this morning between the Quebec communities of La Tuque and Rapide-Blanc, about 175 kilometres north of Trois-Rivieres.

Each of its five tank cars were empty, police said. Four other cars were initially stuck in the mud near the river after leaving the tracks.

Investigators said it was too early to know what caused the train to derail.
