Fly Control

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Can someone tell me what the subject line was for the vinegar control of flies. I meant to print it out when I read it because it sounded so simple and, of course, I didn't and now I need it. It was about putting the vinegar in ziplock bags and hanging them up. I want to try them but I don't remember how much vinegar with how much water or if it was straight vinegar. Thanks.

Colleen, go down to Pests in the archives. It is called Repelling flies with Water. Is that the one you're thinking about? Gerbil

Thanks Gerbil. That was it. I swear I looked under Pests and couldn't find it. LOL. It was driving me crazy that I couldn't find it because it sounded like it was working well for others and seemed like such a simple idea. I wonder if some of the items don't always come up when you sign on since some people have had trouble finding ones they had seen before in the archives. It doesn't matter. All I care is that I have the info. I'm going to try it this week. Thanks much.

I've never heard of this type of fly controll and am interested.New to the internet. How do I get to the archives to look it up? Thanx

Hi Sherri, copy and paste this address into your location box.

http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a.tcl?topic=Countryside

When you get there, go down to the bottom of the page and look through the various topics for "Pests". There are also some other discussions about flies scattered through the misc., uncatagorized, and various livestock headings.

If you don't know how to copy and paste, let me know. And welcome aboard. Gerbil

Sherri, To find the archives on this forum, go to where all of the current topics are listed, where you found my Fly Control question, and page down to the bottom of that list. You will then find a group of topics listed. These are the archives. For the fly control one, go to Pests as the topic category and then look for the one called "Repelling Flies w/Water". That is the one I was referring to. If you can't find it, let me know and I will cut and paste and e- mail it to you.

These bags of water are suppose to repell flies via the reflecting light off the gently swaying bags--the apparant motion is what keeps the flies moving.

We saw them in Mexico. They don't work very well, as our lunch attracted the normal amount of flies one would expect at an open air restaurant.

Other, less tourist-oriented venues, used fly paper or bottle traps.

In our opinion the dancers that entertained during lunch (stomping on wooden boxes while balancing a bottle of beer on their heads) did more to keep the flies away.

Den, do you know where I could get any of those dancers? The water bags don't work for me. Even if the dancers didn't do much against the flies, it would be worth it just to put a good twist in the neighbors' knickers. Gerbil
