Anyone use a Philips CD-I to play VCD's?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a chance to pick up one of these Philips CD-I machines with the digital video cartidge at a pretty low price. I know some of these types of machines don't play CD-R's too well. Will I be able to play my home brewed CD-R VCD's on a Philips CD-I? Just want to make sure before buying.

These Philips CD-I machines with a digital video cartridge will play CD-R VCDs that (1) have a CDi directory with all the appropriate files in it (a CDi directory might be in it but with no files in them) and (2) are preferably straight-play ver 1.1 (ver 2.0 VCDs are okay but the contents indicated in the SEGMENT directory will not be played; so you will not see the stills, menus, etc. only the tracks indicated in the MPEGAV directory will be played). Control will probably be limited to play, stop, and next track; no ff, rew, pause, etc.

I own an old CD-I (dont't ask for the number - I think 210) and it plays VCDs very well. Even higher bitrate VCDs are accepted but I can't bring it to play a photo VCD created with Win on CD 3.7. (If someone got it to work, post me how you did it)

With Nero 5, you can play your home-made vcd on your CDi. Even a photocd can be created. Fast forward, reverse are enabled! The only thing you can't do (for the moment) is menus...

I am quite sure you can create vcd to play on cd-i machines with Adaptec Video CD Creator. All you have to do is to select the CDi option before burning. I have made many such vcds.

See my thread "Will the old Magavox/Philips CDI450/550 play new (white book) VCDS?". Short answer - most play, some don't, some menus may not work, be careful of PAL vs NTSC issues.

Hi,

Have a look at the New International CD-i Association website. They provide lots of info about playing Video-CDs and making sure they're compatible with CD-i (which is a *requirement* of the Video-CD standard, by the way).
