Airliner makes forced landing at Cairo airport

Source: BBC Monitoring Newsfile Publication date: 2000-05-21

An Italy-bound airliner carrying 156 passengers made a forced landing at Cairo airport on Sunday after the pilot detected a malfunction in the rear door, the Egyptian news agency MENA reported.

The pilot discovered a fault in the rear-door pressure system of the US-made MD 90, which was carrying mainly Italian nationals, shortly after take-off. The fault "threatened the safety of the aircraft and its passengers", the agency said.

The passengers were transferred to another plane belonging to the unnamed private air company after a six-hour wait.
