Subscribers with GTE-americast found only a frozen picture yesterday when they tried to tune into cable television.
The problem, said Keith Kamisugi, spokesman for GTE, was caused by corrupted data from the GTE-americast computers that affected subscriber cable boxes.
The bad data, which caused the boxes to freeze, occurred twice during the day: once at about 8:45 a.m. and again between noon and 1 p.m., he said.
GTE-americast provides digital wireless television service to about 9,000 households. The company entered the Honolulu market in 1998.
Subscribers were unable to turn their boxes off by using the power switch because that function also froze.
The problem is corrected by rebooting the box, he said. Subscribers should unplug the box, leave it unplugged for a few moments, then plug it back in.
Until the box is rebooted, the service will remain frozen.
Kamisugi said consumers should call 643-4000 for further information.
Callers who dial that number will hear a recording that gives instructions on how to reboot the cable box, with an option of holding for a live attendant.
At times yesterday, however, the number was inaccessible because of busy circuits.
