How wide?

Canon makes a very good 17-35mm f:2.8L zoom. That's probably the best wide zoom for the 5. Canon also makes great primes as well. 14mm, 15mm fisheye, 20mm, 28mm, 35mm. Some of them are "L" class lenses and are not cheap, but they are very good.

To me, the biggest advantage of a wide angle prime is the close focussing that's available. With wide angle lenses, I often want to get closer and closer to my subject (to exagerate background distance, etc); zooms tend to be severely handicapped in this respect...

i think you need to figure out what you want do first. the 14mm could be the best for one person, and useless for another... for myself, i have access to the 17-35L, and i find it the most versatile, also because i rarely would need anything wider than 17mm.
