FITCHBURG -- A power outage hit several large utility customers in the downtown yesterday, including Fitchburg High School.

Carol J. Fluet, manager of operations support for Unitil- Fitchburg Gas & Electric Light Co., said the outage was reported at 7:39 p.m. As of late yesterday afternoon, she said, power had not been restored.

Ms. Fluet said the outage was caused by the failure of an underground electrical cable. She said utility crews were still trying to find the affected cable late yesterday.

A fire dispatcher said the outage resulted from a short circuit in an electrical cable below Wallace Avenue.

In addition to the high school, the outage affected the Montachusett Regional YMCA on Wallace Avenue, Fitchburg Savings Bank on Main Street and Fitchburg Tire and Service on Boulder Drive.

High School Principal Bernard J. Welch said the school remained open despite the outage. He said the school is equipped with a backup power system. He said power was not lost in the nearby High School Annex, where students were taking the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System tests.
