Hey, I just bought a Creative Labs CD-RW 8432, and the manual indicates that it can burn a VCD. Funny thing because I just got a DVD player for Christmas that can play a VCD. Now I have Irc and use it to get videos off of the Internet. Can I get a VCD off the net, put it on my HD, and then burn it onto a VCD? What is the file extension for a VCD? Is it .dat? .asf? I am new at this stuff so any help is appreciated. I would love to be able to get a VCD and watch it on my DVD player! Thanks!

irc heh? vcd download of the net...must have fast modem :) VCD file extension is *.dat. Just because the manual said that the CD burner can burn VCD, doesn't mean it comes with software to do it with. All CD burner is capable of burning VCD, but it's the software that control this process. Look into the software to see if you have something indicate VCD option. If this option exists, then you can burn VCD. However, you can not burn the *.dat to VCD. You must convert it first to *.mpg and then burn it to VCD. The burn process will convert the *.mpg to *.dat.

hey Wingstar, just for the record the NTI cd maker pro does allow dats (sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt) to be burned back to vcd.

Which model DVD player did you get. It may be able to play VCDs, but it may not be able to play CD-Rs and/or CD-RW. That's the first thing you need to check. Also, most of the VCD MPEGs on the net are sh*t. Better to make your own.
