ATHENS, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A Greek Air Force fighter-bomber Tuesday afternoon crashed in the southern Greek island of Crete due to mechanical failure.

The fighter-bomber, A-7 Corsair, crashed shortly after taking off from the Hania airport in Crete, and the pilot, who suffered massive burns, has been transported to an Athens military hospital.

It is the second jet crash accident for the Greek Air Force this year.

Greece has since 1987 lost more than 73 planes and 44 pilots in training accidents.
