thanks for sharing but i still don't get it. so what is so "enlightening" about this???? kind of mystical but it doesn't seem to shed any more specifics than are already revealed in the bible (it actually pales in comparison). i guess this one seems like the "pope" of the end times will not be part of the antichrist's regieme?

this is the problem with post-bible "prophecies" -- so often they are vague, non-specific. yet when you look at the bible prophecies--they are mostly incredibly detailed and specific--frequently right down to the timing of an event.

-- tt (cuddluppy@aol.com), May 13, 2000.

I read somewhere that at least part of the third Fatima prophecy involves the downfall of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, and that the Vatican has been co-opted by Satan's minions. Also that the current Pope will be the last true Pope, and that any to follow will serve Satan.

-- Observer (lots@to.observe), May 13, 2000.

Cuddl,

As I understand it the Catholic Church teaches that "divine revelation" ended with the death of the last apostle, so what's in the Bible is pretty much officially "it" as far as Catholics having been given an "owner's manual" for the bodies we were born in.

Apparitions like Fatima belong in the category of "personal revelation." God allows this type of thing to occur from time to time, to help us better understand the Catholic faith during the particular time in which we live.

The second benefit is the "Wow," factor. A person might be absolutely convinced that Mary has communicated with him or her from the bottom of a sugar bowl, but the Vatican--knowing full well how serious such claims are--won't endorse such a claim without an absolutely exhaustive investigation.

I'm not a priest, but my personal opinion is that the Vatican waited until the time was right to reveal the content of the "Third Secret," (More, by the way, is supposed to come out shortly, maybe even next week) not only because the proof was finally in (as it must be for a person to become a candidate for Sainthood), but because for the proof to finally be "in" the events foretold must have already occurred.

Again--I'm not a priest, but I know this much: the Catholic faith itself is complex and beautiful. If every Catholic understood it completely, the pews would be filled at every Mass and there would be no shortage of priests.

I'm just a neophyte myself, but what I've learned so far is pretty neat. If you'd like to know more, here's a good place to go. It has a whole section on Fatima along with a search engine, and the priests can be downright hilarious with their "questions of faith" responses. Enjoy!

Vatican Discloses Secret of Fatima

By ADAM BROWN .c The Associated Press

FATIMA, Portugal (May 13) - The Vatican disclosed today that the so-called third secret of Fatima foretold the 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II, ending a mystery that some had feared was apocalyptic.

Believers hold that the mother of Christ appeared before three shepherd children in 1917 in Fatima and gave them three prophecies, two of which have been reported: a vision of ``hell,'' interpreted as World War II, and the rise and fall of Soviet Communism.

After years of speculation, the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said today that the ``third part of the secret of Fatima'' speaks of a ``bishop clothed in white'' who ``falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire.''

Sodano recalled that Pope John Paul has credited the Virgin of Fatima with intervening after he was shot by a Turkish gunman in St. Peter's square on May 13, 1981 - the anniversary of the first reported vision of the Virgin of Fatima in 1917.

The pope beatified two of the shepherd children today during a 24-hour visit to Fatima. Beatification is the final step before sainthood.

About 600,000 people watched under the hot sun as the pope performed a 2 1/2-hour ceremony to beatify Jacinta Marto and her brother Francisco, who said the Virgin Mary appeared to them and their cousin Lucia dos Santos above an olive tree six times here.

Many in the crowd applauded when they heard the long-awaited third secret, announced at the end of the pope's Mass. Some said they were eager to hear more details while others expressed disappointment that the secret did not foretell a momentous event, as many had speculated.

``What they said all happened in the past,'' said Julio Estela, a 33-year-old car salesman from the northern Portuguese town of Trofa. ``This isn't a prophecy. It's disappointing. I think there's more.''

The shepherd children died of pneumonia two years after the visions, at the ages of 9 and 11.

Dos Santos, now 93 and cloistered since 1929 in a Portuguese Carmelite convent, received communion from the pope along with children dressed as shepherds.

She said a silent prayer beside the tombs of her cousins before joining the beatification ceremony in Fatima's neo-Baroque basilica.

The pope was driven through the cheering throng for 40 minutes in the popemobile before taking his chair and raising his right hand in salute before the beatification.

Infirm people on cots and in wheelchairs and thousands of children flanked the altar where the pope performed the ceremony.

Afterward, the pontiff visited the tombs of the dead shepherd children in the Fatima basilica.

The pope is said to have a special fondness for Fatima since 1981, when he was wounded in the assassination attempt.

``I desire once again to celebrate the goodness of the Lord toward me when, severely struck on May 13, 1981, I was saved from death,'' the pope told the crowds in his homily. ``I also express my debt to the blessed Jacinta for the sacrifices and prayers made for the Holy Father, whom she saw suffer greatly.''

One of the bullets fired is placed in the crown of the statue of the Virgin Mary at Fatima, a town of 8,000.

When he came to Fatima on May 12 the following year to thank the Virgin, the pope survived another assassination attempt by a fundamentalist Spanish priest who lunged at him with a bayonet, accusing him of betraying the Church.

In contrast to his apparent weakness and slurred speech on arrival in Fatima on Friday, the pope early today appeared more animated, gesturing frequently to the crowd.

In a surprise gesture Friday, John Paul donated to the Virgin of Fatima a cherished gold ring his late mentor Warsaw Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, the Polish primate, gave him in 1978 when he became pope.

This is expected to be his last foreign trip this year amid a heavy agenda of 2000 Holy Year commitments

Crowds of pilgrims from Portugal, the United States, South America and Africa slept in their cars in the open air or in tents on the grass as they waited for today's beatification.

``It is beautiful what the pope is doing for the children,'' said Lise Bento, a 30-year-old pilgrim from Cape Verde who came to Fatima with her three small children to see the pope for the first time. ``It's an amazing experience.''

Like the shrine at Lourdes, France, Fatima draws huge numbers of visitors - local officials estimate 6 million - each year.

Oh, and a P.S. to the above:

Despite the "Wow" factor, the Catholic Church does not require any of its members to believe in these types of events.

Catholic teachings--combined with the Bible--are enough for many, and no one has any quarrel with that.

-- Blessings (to@all.ofyou), May 13, 2000.

One more item when it comes to the timing of today's announcement:

Tomorrow will mark the one week anniversary of President Vladimir Putin's inauguration, a President who is vowing to make Russia strong again.

Coincidence? Uh....

-- Blessings (to@all.ofyou), May 13, 2000.

This so-called revelation of the Third Secret of Fatima is a hoax. If true at all, it is only a small part of the real story. I read somewhere that when a previous Pope showed a written version of the Third Secret prophecy to a few trusted, highly placed Cardinals, that "their faces turned ashen".

-- Searcher (for@the.truth), May 13, 2000.

Hmmm...seems to me that if the faces of Cardinals who read the secret turned "ashen" it MIGHT be out of fear that they might be numbered among the "corpses" surrounding the "bishop in white" as he approached the cross?

Regardless, it seems that we'll know more soon.

I don't know where you're coming from my friend (in terms of your views on God, organized religion, etc.,), but God bless.

-- Blessings (to@all.ofyou), May 13, 2000.

Oh, and here's the official press release from the Vatican today, offered up in explanation to the above referenced to "corpses."

What a most interesting day in human history. We need to remember that the Catholic (by the way, "Catholic" means "universal") church has members all over the world. Lots of them. That--if for no other reason--is why today is an historic date in the history of this church.

CARDINAL SODANO READS A TEXT ON THE "THIRD SECRET"

VATICAN CITY, MAY 13, 2000 (VIS) - This morning at the end of Mass at the Shrine of Fatima, Portugal, during which the Pope beatified the shepherd children Jacinta and Francisco, Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano read out, in Portuguese, a text concerning the third secret of Fatima. The text is given in full below:

"At the conclusion of this solemn celebration, I feel bound to offer to our beloved Holy Father John Paul II, on behalf of all present, heartfelt good wishes for his approaching eightieth birthday and to thank him for his significant pastoral ministry for the good of all God's Holy Church.

"On the solemn occasion of his visit to Fatima, His Holiness has directed me to make an announcement to you. As you know, the purpose of his visit to Fatima has been to beatify the two 'little shepherds'. Nevertheless he also wishes his pilgrimage to be a renewed gesture of gratitude to Our Lady for her protection during these years of his papacy. This protection seems also to be linked to the so-called 'third part' of the secret of Fatima.

"That text contains a prophetic vision similar to those found in Sacred Scripture, which do not describe with photographic clarity the details of future events, but rather synthesize and condense against a unified background events spread out over time in a succession and a duration which are not specified. As a result, the text must be interpreted in a symbolic key.

"The vision of Fatima concerns above all the war waged by atheist systems against the Church and Christians, and it describes the immense suffering endured by the witnesses to the faith in the last century of the second millennium. It is an interminable Way of the Cross led by the Popes of the twentieth century.

"According to the interpretation of the 'little shepherds,' which was also recently confirmed by Sister Lucia, the 'bishop clothed in white' who prays for all the faithful is the Pope. As he makes his way with great effort towards the Cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred (bishops, priests, men and women religious and many lay persons), he too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire.

"After the assassination attempt of May 13 1981, it appeared evident to His Holiness that it was 'a motherly hand which guided the bullet's path,' enabling the 'dying Pope' to halt 'at the threshold of death.' On the occasion of a visit to Rome by the then bishop of Leiria-Fatima, the Pope decided to give him the bullet which had remained in the jeep after the assassination attempt, so that it might be kept in the Shrine. At the behest of the bishop, the bullet was later set in the crown of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

"The successive events of 1989 led, both in the Soviet Union and in a number of countries of Eastern Europe, to the fall of the Communist regime which promoted atheism. For this too His Holiness offers heartfelt thanks to the Most Holy Virgin. In other parts of the world, however, attacks against the Church and against Christians, together with the burden of suffering which they involve, tragically continue. Even if the events to which the third part of the Secret of Fatima refers now seem part of the past, Our Lady's call to conversion and penance, issued at the beginning of the twentieth century, remains timely and urgent today.

'The Lady of the message seems to read the signs of the times - the signs of our time - with special insight... The insistent invitation of Mary Most Holy to penance is nothing but the manifestation of her maternal concern for the fate of the human family, in need of conversion and forgiveness.'

"In order that the faithful may better receive the message of Our Lady of Fatima, the Pope has charged the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith with making public the third part of the secret, after the preparation of an appropriate commentary.

"Let us thank Our Lady of Fatima for her protection. To her maternal intercession let us entrust the Church of the Third Millennium.

"'Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix!.'

"Intercede pro Ecclesia Dei! Intercede pro Sancto Patre Iohanne Paolo II! Amen'."

The complete service on the Pope's trip to Fatima will be transmitted on Monday May 15. PV-FATIMA/THIRD SECRET/SODANO VIS 000513 (730)

(The plot thickens:)

Fatima revives plot theory of papal shooting

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY, May 14 (Reuters) - Pope John Paul's decision to reveal that the 1917 ``Secret of Fatima'' foretold the failed bid to kill him has rekindled the debate over whether the shooting was a communist plot.

``I am 100 percent certain,'' said Ferdinando Imposimato, a magistrate who led an investigation into whether the Bulgarian secret services, acting on behalf of the then Soviet Union, had hired Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca to kill the Pope in 1981.

``By now, I think there are no longer any doubts,'' Imposimato said in an interview on Italian state radio RAI on Sunday.

``I even wrote to the Pope and I told him that Agca was the instrument of an international plot, which certainly involved the secret services of the East Bloc, among them the Bulgarians and the KGB,'' he said.

Acting under papal instructions, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano revealed the essence of the Third Secret of Fatima to hundreds of thousands of people at a mass where the Pope beatified two of the three shepherd children said to have seen the Madonna in 1917 and received her message.

The secret, long feared to be apocalyptic, predicted an attempt to kill a Pope and ``war waged by atheist systems against the Church and Christians'' in the 20th century, Sodano said.

Agca, a trained killer who was a member of the right-wing Grey Wolves group, shot and nearly killed the Pope in St Peter's Square on May 13, 1981, the 64th anniversary of the Madonna's first apparition to the Portuguese shepherd children.

At the time of the shooting, events in the Pope's Polish homeland were starting the domino effect that would lead to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989.

The Pope was a staunch supporter of Poland's Solidarity union and most historians agree that he had a vital role in events that led to the formation of the East Bloc's first freely elected government and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The question over who was really behind the assassination attempt is one of the enduring mysteries of the 20th century.

It has been the subject of three probes and two trials.

Agca, now 41, was arrested in St Peter's Square minutes after the shooting. He underwent a first trial two months later and was given a life sentence he is now serving in Italy.

At a 1986 trial, prosecutors failed to prove charges that Bulgarian secret services had hired Agca on behalf of Moscow.

``BULGARIAN CONNECTION'' COULD NOT BE PROVED

The so-called ``Bulgarian Connection'' trial ended with an ``acquittal for lack of sufficient evidence'' of three Turks and three Bulgarians charged with conspiring along with Agca.

But the verdict, a quirk of the Italian judicial system, fell short of a full acquittal. It substantially meant that the jury was not fully convinced of the defendants' innocence but that there was not enough evidence for a guilty verdict.

Imposimato has said in the past that he found it difficult to understand how Agca could have acted alone because the Turk had false passports, moved freely about the Eastern Bloc, and spent lavishly although he had no job.

He said he believed the Pope knew Agca did not act alone and that the Pontiff understood the ``historical role'' Agca played.

``He (the Pope) forgave him even though the Pope knew that Agca was maybe an instrument of an international plot,'' Imposimato said in the radio interview.

Agca gave conflicting testimony during the 1986 trial.

He said the order to kill the Pope came from the Soviet embassy in the Bulgarian capital Sofia but his credibility was damaged when he claimed to be Jesus Christ.

Agca also said several times during the trial that he wanted the Vatican to reveal the Third Secret of Fatima and asked the Pope about it when the Pontiff visited him in prison in 1983.

``Now I know for sure that I was the unwitting instrument of a mysterious plan,'' Italian news agency Ansa quoted Agca as telling his lawyer after Saturday's revelation of the secret.

Vatican officials do not like to talk about the possibility of a Soviet-backed plot to kill the Pope but many, including the late secretary of state Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, often said he was convinced that Agca could not have acted alone.

The Pope first saw the secret's contents, which the Vatican said is symbolic rather than detailed, after his 1978 election.

He has ordered it to be published along with a commentary to help the faithful understand it.

SIGHTINGS

Did The Vatican Reveal The FULL Fatima Propehcy? From Stan and Holly Deyo http://www.millennium-ark.net 5-14-00 The long-awaited "Third Secret of Fatima" was revealed yesterday at the close of a ceremony to beatify two of the three children to whom the vision was given in 1917. More than 500,000 people gathered for the ceremony and to hear the 83-year-old mystery unveiled. And the mystery was? That an assassination attempt would be made on the Pope which they said was fulfilled 19 years ago. This may indeed be a part of the Fatima secret, but it's doubtful if it is everything. It simply doesn't add up. The Vatican has been well aware of the furor surrounding the Secret for decades. Many people have wanted to know what it held, yearned for it, yet there was nothing but silence. It's not that assassination is not despicable. It is, but it hardly merits "lips-sealed" 19 years after the fact especially since the Pope survived the attempt. Twice now Kathleen Keating has been interviewed on Art Bell. Recently deceased Father Malachi Martin was a guest on Art Bell numerous occasions. Ms. Keating revealed that she had spoken with Malachi Martin and shared the same information during their interviews. BOTH revealed on air that (this is paraphrased) "the Fatima secret was the worst thing you could ever imagine and then go way beyond that". Here is an excerpt about Fatima from her first interview with Art Bell: Art - Did you speak Father Martin about the third secret of Fatima? Kathleen - Only in vagaries, and in verifying information that I had, because he was sworn to oath that he would not reveal it. We did intimate enough details that you got a good idea Art - Do you recall his saying it would be the worst that you could imagine? Kathleen - Right, and then some. Art - And then some? And it's worse than that? Kathleen - It is. It is enough to drive the strongest person nuts. Art - How close to all of this do you think we are now? Kathleen - I think you're going see part of it happening within a year or two. Art - Within a year or two? Kathleen - Within a year or two, if not sooner. From what I've been told, the mechanism is in place, and it is moving. This interview is posted on her web site. The second interview which discusses the Third Secret of Fatima a little further is soon to be posted. Again we reiterate, what is hinted here does not sound like assassination. Kathleen Keating, author of "The Final Warning" http://www.finalwarningthebook.com/ was Art's guest, I think on February 20th and again on April 12th of this year. Her interviews were riveting as were Malachi Martin's. Both of these people, especially Kathleen, were up front that the famed secret stated the next Pope will be the False Prophet or the AntiPope as Catholics refer to him. For those not familiar with Revelation, this is not the same as the Antichrist, but in simple terms, he is the figure who does much to corrupt the church and facilitates the numbering system for the Antichrist. Ms. Keating, as well as others like Tom Gaughan in his book "Countdown to Armageddon and Beyond" (ISBN: 0-646-36041-8) both state that it is highly likely Pope John Paul II may be "helped along into the next world" either through murder or that he will be declared dead or incapacitated when it is not so. This is to hurry along the next Pope's, anti Pope's, instatement. Comments were also made that the Pope has many enemies and that he has had a very difficult time with those around him in the Vatican that oppose his traditional teachings. Though this information may be startling, even unbelievable to some, it agrees with what Stan was quietly told about the Third Secret of Fatima in 1975 by a Jesuit priest. The priest had been in the Vatican when Pope John XXIII read the secret aloud and fainted on the spot. During one of the interviews with Malachi Martin, Stan faxed into Art a message stating what he had been told by the Jesuit about the secret and Malachi Martin confirmed its veracity on-air. When questioned why the last of the Fatima vision had been withheld from the world and Catholics in particular, Ms Keating answered the reason was two-fold: 1. it might have shaken the faith of Catholics so severely that they would have fallen away from the church many years ago. 2. no one wants to assist the Antichrist in any shape or form With the Pope in frail health at best, we may be on the brink of worse trouble than we have even seen should the next Pope be the False Prophet. The Pope during the ceremony yesterday beatified two of the three children who died shortly after receiving the vision. With enemies all around Pope John Paul II, he may have been pressured too severely to NOT reveal the full extent of the Third Secret of Fatima. IF it is true that the next Pope will be the AntiPope or False Prophet, then surely that person already wields great power within the Vatican and does not want his hand shown as his best armor is deceit. Very possibly the flimsy secret revealed yesterday was delayed 19 years after its fulfillment when the last remaining child who received the vision is herself a frail old woman of 93 and living in a convent. It is doubtful that she could or would confirm or deny the truth of what we heard yesterday since she has been cloistered since 1929. We share this commentary with you not to shake anyone's faith, but rather to ask you to consider if any of this makes sense to you and to be on the alert lest you be deceived. Just more spin and bullshit from the Vatican. Please, send MO money now! Tax em Dano! How revealing for the church to select an event that actually happened years ago. I too am an amazingly accurate reverse prophet.

A secret told of woe.

Now let me see,

What shall it be,

I am still staring incredulously at their idols and rituals. All that statue and Saint whatever worshiping. Worshiping a human form (named Pope) seems like a cult from a distance. A Religion still stuck in a time? But Hey, I wasn't placed to cast any stones, I am still trying to learn. Flame Away...

May I humbly suggest that those of you who find such fault with the Catholic faith:

1. Read a the Catechism (the word means "instruction) of the Catholic Church, available at any bookstore or library. Your comments make me suspect you have not done so.

and

2. Remember that ALL churches are of this world, not of the next. As long as there are humans involved, no human practice of religion will be perfect. We can always try, however.

Text from the Pope's beatification homily in Fatima:

We make spiritual progress when we rely on Mary

6. My last words are for the children: dear boys and girls, I see so many of you dressed like Francisco and Jacinta. You look very nice! But in a little while or tomorrow you will take these chothes off and ... the little shepherds will disappear. They should not disappear, should they?! Our Lady needs you all to console Jesus, who is sad because of the bad things done to him; he needs your prayers and your sacrifices for sinners.

Ask your parents and teachers to enrol you in the "school" of Our Lady, so that she can teach you to be like the little shepherds, who tried to do whatever she asked them. I tell you that "one makes more progress in a short time of submission and dependence on Mary than during entire years of personal initiatives, relying on oneself alone" (St Louis de Montfort, The True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, n. 155). This was how the little shepherds became saints so quickly. A woman who gave hospitality to Jacinta in Lisbon, on hearing the very beautiful and wise advice that the little girl gave, asked who taught it to her. "It was Our Lady", she replied. Devoting themselves with total generosity to the direction of such a good Teacher, Jacinta and Francisco soon reached the heights of perfection.

7."Father, to you I offer praise, for what you have hidden from the learned and the clever you have revealed to the merest children".

Latest on this story:

VATICAN (CWNews.com) -- The full text of the third secret of Fatima will be made public sometime during early June, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has revealed.

In an interview published on May 19 by the Italian daily La Reppublica, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith disclosed that a committee of historians and theologians is now preparing a commentary on the text of the Fatima secret, in an effort to help place the message in the appropriate historical and religious context. That commentary, with the text itself, will be presented to the public at a Vatican press conference, he said. He said that the exact date of the announcement had not yet been set.

"There will be no new surprises" in the message, the cardinal said. On the contrary, he continued, the publication of the full text of the Virgin's message may help to restore the matter "to the proper dimensions."

Cardinal Ratzinger said that Christians should not attach exaggerated importance to "these private revelations, which are not essential for Christian, even if they do furnish an help in prayer and Christian life for those who seek them."

The cardinal also cautioned that the Fatima message as a whole is based "not on sensationalism, but only on the fundamentals of Christianity." He did say that the tie between the third secret and the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II was "quite apparent."

In the same interview, when Cardinal Ratzinger whether the Pope might consider resignation, he dismissed the possibility "in the most absolute fashion." He pointed out that the Pope has attended virtually every major ceremony for the Jubilee, and that he has continued his foreign travels and other projects, thus demonstrating that he remains "very present to the Church, in spiritual and human terms."

Therefore, he concluded, "there is no reason to believe that he might not be capable of continued his pastoral mission."

Observer,

If you'd like to know more about the Catholic Church's view of Malachi Martin, go here:

http://www.ewtn.com/expert/expertfaqframe.asp?source=/vexperts/confere nce.htm

This page also has a section on Medjugorje, to which the faithful (laity and priests, etc.) are allowed--by the Vatican--to make pilgrimages as long as they are not organized by parishes, etc. The jury's still out on Medjugorje, because two of the six children (now young adults) are reportedly still receiving daily apparitions.

I suspect it will be a long time before the Vatican decides whether Medjugorje is--as is the view of many of the nearly 25 million people who have travelled there from around the world--the continuation of what happened at Fatima.
