Sydney, Australia: Exchange software problems disable 50,000 phone users

Over 50,000 telephone users in Sydney's city and eastern suburbs areas cannot make calls this afternoon.

Telstra's Paul Levins says software troubles at the Pitt Street Exchange, shortly after midday, have meant most people cannot dial out.

He says the problem should be fixed by the end of business today.

"Essentially there's been a software fault which has caused a large number of customers in the eastern part of the CBD, to not be able to make outgoing calls," he said.

"They can confidently receive calls but the outgoing calls are not being made, although that's patchy, with 10 to 15 per cent of call traffic still getting out."
